After 4 NYPD Officers Shot, Bloomberg Continues Crusade Against Illegal Guns

NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg is again ramping up his crusade against illegal guns after authorities say four NYPD cops were injured during a shootout in Brooklyn.

Two of the officers are still at Lutheran Medical Center in stable condition.

Police say the alleged shooter, 33-year-old Nakwon Foxworth, had a small arsenal of illegal weapons inside his apartment when he got into an argument with moving company employees in front of a Sheepshead Bay apartment building on Nostrand Avenue Saturday night.

Police say the movers called 911 after Foxworth allegedly threatened them with a gun. That’s when authorities say Foxworth retreated to his sixth floor apartment and barricaded himself with his pregnant girlfriend and 4-month-old baby inside.

When officers arrived, police say they got the woman and infant out and moved in. That’s when authorities say Foxworth opened fire, shooting 12 times and wounding four officers.

“He struck Detective Michael Keenan in his left calf, Detective Kenneth Ayala in the thigh and foot, Police Officer Matthew Granahan in his left calf and Captain Al Pizzano sustained a graze wound to his face,” said Police Commissioner Ray Kelly.

Cops fired back, hitting Foxworth in the abdomen.

“The gunfight occurred in close quarters with the assailant and the officers no more than 10 feet apart,” said Kelly.

Police say Foxworth used an illegal, sawed-off military-style assault rifle. Authorities say he’s an ex-con who he was released from prison just two years ago after serving ten years for attempted murder and robbery.

Bloomberg spoke out about this latest incident at a news conference Sunday, noting that eight members of the NYPD have been shot in the last four months.

“We will continue to do whatever we can to take illegal weapons off our streets, but until Congress takes some action to stand up to the gun lobby, illegal guns will continue to wind up in the hands of people like tonight’s shooter,” Bloomberg said. “It could have been a great tragedy.”

Foxworth has been charged with attempted murder, assault on a police officer, criminal possession of a weapon and menacing.

  1. The guns he had WERE ILLEGAL, how will making them MORE ILLEGAL prevent this?!!!??!?! Multiple felon released from jail… there’s your problem.

  2. Bloomberg is not fighting illegal guns he fighting to make all guns illegal, his dis-ingenuousness & arrogance is plain disgusting

  3. Bloomberg has been pushing to tighten up sales of guns in the southern states where gun purchases are easily with shaky ID.

  4. ArmedJew & eric55…

How dare you guys cloud the issue with facts!
The politicians pass these anti gun laws because they are FEEL GOOD laws, i.e. they make the dumb public, who don’t think things through, FEEl better about the crime situation. These laws make the public FEEL the politicians are doing something when in fact they are NOT!

As ArmedJew said, keep the felons in jail! – That is the answer, but they wont do THAT, – because it will offend the activists of the minority communities where the majority of the violent felons come from.

The criminals LOVE anti-gun laws for the simple reason that they know very well that no law will keep THEM from getting their hands on guns, BUT the laws WILL keep their victims unarmed!

  5. Why would anyone think that criminals, who by definition do not obey laws, would magically obey gun laws? Mayor Bloomberg reveals the wishful thinking common among politicians who think that command-and-control edicts will be obeyed without question and work without glitches.
