TOTALLY OUT OF CONTROL: Bloomberg Strikes Again: NYC Bans ‘Chulent’ Donations To The Homeless

The following is a WCBSTV Report:

Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s food police have struck again!

Outlawed are food donations to homeless shelters because the city can’t assess their salt, fat and fiber content, reports CBS 2’s Marcia Kramer.

Glenn Richter arrived at a West Side synagogue on Monday to collect surplus bagels — fresh nutritious bagels — to donate to the poor. However, under a new edict from Bloomberg’s food police he can no longer donate the food to city homeless shelters.

It’s the “no bagels for you” edict.

“I can’t give you something that’s a supplement to the food you already have? Sorry that’s wrong,” Richter said.

Richter has been collecting food from places like the Ohav Zedek synagogue and bringing it to homeless shelters for more than 20 years, but recently his donation, including a “cholent” or carrot stew, was turned away because the Bloomberg administration wants to monitor the salt, fat and fiber eaten by the homeless.

Richter said he was stunned. He said his family has eaten the same food forever and flourished.

“My father lived to 97; my grandfather lived to 97, and they all enjoyed it and somehow we’re being told that this is no good and I think there is a degree of management that becomes micromanagement and when you cross that line simply what you’re doing is wrong,” Richter said.

But Mayor Bloomberg, a salt-aholic himself, was unapologetic.

“For the things that we run because of all sorts of safety reasons, we just have a policy it is my understanding of not taking donations,” Bloomberg said.

Told that his administration recently enacted the policy, the mayor was Grinch-like.

“If they did in the past they shouldn’t have done it and we shouldn’t have accepted it,” Bloomberg said.

Richter said that over the years he’s delivered more than two tons of food to the homeless. He said Mayor Bloomberg is eating away at his ability to do good.

The ban on food donations was made by an inter-agency task force that includes the departments of Health and Homeless Services.

  1. the mayor believes that it is better for the homeless not to eat then eat something that might be not the most healthy of foods. IDIOT

  2. For those of you you don’t know, Glenn Richter is one of the key people in the movement to free Soviet Jews begining in the early 1960’s. He was one of the founders of SSSJ Student Struggle for Soviet Jewry.

  3. Before you pounce on Bloomberg (harasha) understand that the people in homeless shelters are not the same as people who are homeless on the street. Technically, a lot of the people in seagate and those in farrockaway are now “homeless shelter” people. You think they would just eat any food delivered without a question of who made it and whats in it even though its kosher?! I think most definitely NOT! Do you eat any junk offered to you? Or do you like to make sure its good and healthy first? Dont compare people in shelters to those who are on the street.

That being said this farshulteneh meshuganah should have a mapala the likes of which hasnt been seen in a long time.

  4. WIY

Did you ask the people in the shelters that question? Some of them that are homeless from the storm would love a good and fresh meal (surplus food is usually not mor than leftovers from that day).

Shame on you and shame on the mayor for blocking a good deed

  5. Even after he had the chutzpu to change the law and run for a 3rd term the frum community knew who he was and supported and voted for him regardless, so no sympathy here

  6. haShem has had enough of Bloomberg, and last summer hit NYC with Irene for same gender marraige legislation, and this year hit NYC with Sandy for Metzizoh b’Peh anti-legislation.

But probably, Bloomberg just doesn’t get it.

  7. No one should be feeding chulent to ANYONE, homeless or not, unless the ingredients are healthy. It is quite possible to make a very nutritious chulent with low fat meat or better, using tofu. Its not clear that the chulent offered by these mosdos was of the healthy variety.

  8. It seems to me that the mayor is the epitome of of a megalomanic, irrational, self proclaimed czar. He should be impeached. He has dictatored New York City long enough. He is like a person from Sodom and doesn’t allow charity. Maybe the people in the shelters would like some bagels and cholent, who is Bloomberg to tell them what to eat? Is he their father or mother? No, he’s just a self proclaimed overlord to the unfortunate citizens of New York.
