Report: Death Toll Among WTC Rescue Workers Soars

wtcw.jpgThe number of documented deaths among World Trade Center rescue workers has reportedly soared since last year.A representative from the New York State Department of Health told the New York Post that 817 workers have died since the attacks, up from 664 deaths last September.

State researchers report at least 270 deaths were due to cancer, and more than 200 from other illnesses.

The article also says about 150 workers suffered traumatic deaths – such as in the line of duty, drug overdoses, assaults or suicides.

Officials tell the Post the rise is mainly due to city agencies and WTC medical programs sharing more records and say they’re continuing to collect cases, meaning that number could rise.

  1. Sad but we don’t know the reason behind the numbers.
With the thousands that responded, 817 may not be a significant number (in the statistical sense). Also, as the years pass the number will grow more quickly: whether that is due to the aging population of responders or is accelerated due to exposure/trauma on 9-11 remains to be seen.
