United States Announces Renewed Sanctions Against Syria

The budding romance between Damascus and Washington seems to have come to an abrupt halt, at least for now, with US President Barak Obama announcing renewed sanctions against Syria for a year. The president accused the Syrian of supporting terrorism as well as developing weapons of mass destruction.

The White House announcement follows recent statements from Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who confirmed Israeli reports that Syria has been sending Scud missiles to Hizbullah in southern Lebanon.

The president added that Syria’s actions pose a threat to American security, economic interests and foreign policy.
