WIY and 2scents - I think you are misunderstanding iced's question (he/she can correct me if I am wrong). He is not complaining that this vinegar-free horseradish is being sold in the supermarket and that Jews are consequently being nichshal - he is simply getting people's input on whether HIS minhag would allow him to have this horseradish or not - i.e. if others have the same minhag as he does, do they eat this product? Or, a question even for those without this minhag, do people think that based on the principle of this minhag, which clearly has to do with eating foods that are simanim for a sweet year and refraining from those that are bitter/sour, would HE be allowed to make an exception for this product which is less sour than your standard horseradish?

iced - I don't know. Good question. You def won't go to gehinom, either way, and I doubt G-d will condemn you to a bitter year for having horseradish, but it is your family minhag, which certainly has some weight. Try your local orthodox rabbi?

Our minhag is to eat honey and have no chrein between Rosh Hashana and Hoshana Rabba. Lately I see for sale vinegar-free horseradish for people who don't eat horseradish this period. Our minhag by our parents and grandparents was always not to have horseradish altogether. Would using this no vinegar horseradish be a breach of our mesorah?

the mishna berura says you can make up your own things that sound like other things. For example yogurt is gut yohr, banana is bon anne, raisins and celery for rise in salary etc etc. There are more, cant think of them at the moment. Can you?

a) The power of Tefilla. There is so much to say, and so many unbelievable stories, any Drosho can be a winner. Especially to those who don't hear the same thing every year. And if they are the sort of people who only come once a year, you can emphasize how HKB"H loves every person and all their tefillos...

b) Malchiyus - the focal point of Rosh Hashono is to remember that G-D is our King, and we must be Machniah [humble] ourselves to Him. Of course mention Yiras Shamayim, and why we don't say Viduy on Rosh Hashana... and so on.

Greetings y'all,

So, if you read my little intro from yesterday, you'll know that I attend a small shul in the suburbs of Atlanta that does not have a rabbi (this year). For the last couple of years, I've been asked to give drashas on Shabbos and Yom Tov, including the Yomim Noraim. While I certainly don't feel qualified to teach Torah publicly, I agreed to the kehillah's request. I'm OK with public speaking. Some Shabbosim I hit a home run, most of the time it's a ground ball. Doing this every week, I don't get nervous or concerned. But the Yomim Noraim are different.

I've given the Rosh Hashanah drasha for a couple of years. I didn't grow up orthodox (more traditional conservative), so my only memorable rabbinic speeches came on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur (I generally wasn't in shul otherwise). And these were big deals. People come once a year, they expect to hear something monumental. And like every year, I'm at a loss as to what to say.

So, if you had a change to pick the subject of the Rosh Hashanah drasha that you're going to hear, what would you pick?

Much appreciated,
The Rashbak
