Gregaaron - there is a weird but very real human desire to not go in the way of tzniyus. This includes getting involved in the affairs of others and be privy to information that is otherwise private. This is, btw, the desire that "reality TV" plays on and is the base reason why it's appealing to people.

Facebook, provides the means for people to show the world parts of their lives that other people would not otherwise show. Nobody needs to see you drinking coffee with your wife in the patio, nobody needs to hear about what you had for breakfast, or what shoes you bought. It's not that these things are taboo, but the concept of putting a notification of all your daily activities on the town bulletin board is the antithesis of living a humble and tzniyus life. It ruins our sensitivities and wears away our refined appreciation for what's private and what isn't.

Friendships which are created and fostered through human interaction are put on the same plane as mere acquaintances through the convenience of virtual messaging. Thus, social skills and relationships are weakened.

People spend hours sifting through friends' photo albums, messages, updates, etc. The whole thing is destructive in so many ways. The Facebook corporation spends plenty of research and money figuring out ways to get their users to spend more time online, and it works.

Really? Considering that many friends people have on Facebook are those who they would otherwise not be keeping up with at all, in what way is that psychologically and socially unhealthy?

(Not giving an opinion on Facebook in general - at least not now - but looking for clarification.)

My mistake "jbaldy22", I thought you were trying to argue that the benefits outweigh the negatives. All I'm arguing is that they don't. Even if you only friend relatives and close friends, you can't control what appears on their profiles, and what/who you are exposed to. But besides that, I'm saying the very nature of keeping up with someone else on the level that Facebook allows and encourages is unhealthy.. psychologically, socially, and spiritually.

@Curiosity my comment was directed at people who believe that facebook is just a waste of time and is not useful. they are dead wrong. facebook is very useful for networking and advertising and i don't think there is anything that could replace that. also if you dont want to friend members of the opposite gender or view things which are not tzniyus you dont have to - you can even block all the pictures on facebook if thats your choice. facebook is a tool like any other despite your insistence to the contrary.

Also, getting a job through Facebook isn't necessarily an excuse. There are plenty of assur ways of finding work, some of which can't be discussed on YWN without getting banned (and shouldn't be discussed elsewhere for that matter), but that doesn't make them mutar. Let's not fool ourselves by arguing that finding a job through Facebook warrants its continued usage. I don't mean this to offend anyone who was lucky enough to find work on Facebook, but I'm just saying that this 'prat' doesn't necessarily justify the 'klall'.

Coming from someone who had Facebook for years up until several months ago: Facebook is a disease. It's a cesspool for avairas, and allows ppl to make comments which they wouldn't have the chutzpah to say in person to someone's face. Other than that, the need to "follow" people, read about their daily activities, and see photos of otherwise private events does not come from a healthy source. Life was much more private before Facebook, and its use is a constant corruption of tznius. It took me several years to become mature enough to admit this to myself.

I do not have a facebook page, so I have very little personal insight to add to this forum.

I did, however, pick up an interesting book at the airport a few weeks ago which discussed in-depth a side of facebook, social networking, email and internet search engines that I never considered. Yes, we all know the facts that usually get passed around: Internet is a tool--it can be used for good or for bad--it opens up tivot--it's addictive--etc, etc, etc. I found it helpful to learn some of the technical and psycological aspects surrounding this debate. If you want, the book I read is "The Filter Bubble" by Eli Pariser. There are plenty more on this subject, not all of them negative if you're looking for balanced veiw. Think of it as investment. Try to understand who is in charge of the company, what are thier goals and aims (there is no such thing as a free lunch), and what are the pros and cons of using thier website.

Facebook comes with everything else in the world. The bad side that the יצר הרע made it for, and the good side the יצר הרע tricked us with. Like the Internet - billions of good reasons to have [e.g. convenience, leisure, business, trade], it can be used too easily for the bad. The same it with Facebook. NOBODY has ever been killed from using YWN. Unfortunately, too many people - mainly teenage girls - have been murdered brutally through Facebook. People have left Yiddishkeit because of Facebook. One can create friends on whom we Daven daily והרחיקנו מחבר רע. How many stories are there of the countless people who have done terrible things online - on social networking sites - good, honest people whose temptation caught up with them? We are safer without the outside world at our fingertips. We are safer to simply stick to people we know and can see, without forging relationships with those anonymous.

getting back to the ops q
i have an answer yet this is my opinion!
facebook is a way which people can connect to ther people without having there # or know their name...i have gone on facebook and was able to find information abt ppl without having to know who they are on a personal level i just looked for their friend clicked on their name and if they didnt block themselves i would be able to see their pictures and some ppl even put their cell #.
this is a way whicjh ppl can connect with others whom they meet once in their life or sometimes never
adults mite use this wisely yet with teenagers or younger ppl they began talking to people who they dont know...and are able to convince them to do diff things or they begin talking to the opposite gender which doesnt just stop there. they beging talking then they want to meet and it never stops i can go ojn and on... but im sure most of you know what can happen.
so know its in your hand to decide whether or not u would like to go on and put your entire life on there.

p.s. it also destroys shidduchim.. women and men begin to also talk to opposite gender behind their spouses backs.
people who were not able to talk to u till now bec had no way of getting your #, can now!

BludgerGold13380:
I can confidently say that as with anything if someone is looking for trouble they can find it anywhere. ANY tool used the wrong way can do damage.

a) if you don't know how to protect your online content (and block information you dont want strangers to see) you are at a big risk for anything you post on facebook.
b) there's always been a problem with yichud on the internet and what it means. Facebook makes it even easier. So many time's I got "poked" by a guy till I asked him who he is and what he wants... now I learnt to ignore them and block the person right away...
c) people aren't so careful with who they add... they think so what my friends husband added me its not like we're going to talk to each other... nice and easy way when ur both having a hard time in ur marriage to suddenly be online and say hi.... thats where major problems start.

My belief is what you do with it. The blocking of internet can prevent many things yes - but it doesn't solve the problem, just like if you use facebook like i do to keep in touch with family and friends who are all over the world - and makes it alot easier for me to keep in touch and updated.

I think the issue the Rabbanim have with it is that its soooo easy and so accessible to do something wrong and make a mistake and all these things just make it easier. We always created a "fence" why is there muktzah? To make a fence around ourselves. So I think I'm starting to realize that thats what the Rabbanim are trying to do - is make a fence around the internet, because the Yetzer Hara is very tricky and he knows how to get us to do the wrong thing without us even realizing it.

I just checked Mostly Music's Facebook page and didn't see that.

What I did see was that they have had a Facebook page for over 10 months and have only managed to get 74 likes. Far cry from a "thriving business like ours with so many “followers”".

If anything, it's a smart business move for them as they will no longer need to spend business hours on it as well as take flack from the right for something that wasn't generating anything.

whats the point of having a website if no one can use it anyways, because the internet is assur to have in one's home. But, once one realizes that people are using the website (ostensibly in contradiction with the "psak"), why not just keep the facebook page?

DY: He's saying that his understanding of the psak is that the only permissible use of the internet is for business purposes, and not for any personal or recreational purposes. And the only place allowed for it be accessed from, is a place of business.

And he is asking how then can Mostly Music have any online presence, even outside Facebook (based upon their statement you quoted above of them following the gedolim), when their customer base who accesses Mostly Music's website and purchases their music online are doing so for non-business purposes, but rather for recreational purposes. Thus Mostly Music is still enabling and promoting non-business use of the internet by maintaining their e-commerce website.

So which people are now going to use mostly music? the ones who have internet at home for business purposes? If so, mostly music falls under the category of "business use" in what sense.

I don't understand your question.

Just another P.R. stunt, being disingenuous while still not actually listening to the supposed "psak." Keep the facebook page, and allow people access to good, wholesome Jewish music, while maintaining Jewish Parnassa.

Kudos to Mostly Music!

The following post appears on the Mostly Music Facebook page:

To our dear loyal mostlymusic costumers & followers:
Here at Mostly Music, we really appreciate you, & your loyalty to us! But we also respect you, and want to do well by you in every way.
That’s why, after some serious reflection, we’ve reached an important decision: effective today, we are removing our presence on Facebook.
Some might say it’s a foolhardy choice that a thriving business like ours with so many “followers” can’t simply do away with its Facebook page. But we’re not just a business – we’re, first and foremost, a Jewish enterprise serving the Jewish community, and we take seriously the responsibility that gives us. It is only days since the unprecedented gathering at Citi Field at which tens of thousands came together for the sole purpose of, “taking control of the technology in our lives before it takes complete control of us”, and we feel this decision is the right one for us. Knowing our clients, we trust you’ll agree.
From today on, you can “follow” us by directly visiting our website, mostlymusic.com, and enjoying the amazing selection and service with which our customers are well familiar. We will also soon be launching a separate page at mostlymusic.com featuring constant updates on all our exciting sales and endeavors.
Mostly Music’s messages were going out to over 5,000 people on Facebook, no doubt an effective advertising tool which they are now putting to a stop as a result of the message of the gedolim.

That's like asking what is so bad with smoking only one cigarette a day? It's actually not dangerous per se. But the chances of veering off course (and smoking more than one a day, or engaging in spiritually ruinous activities on fb) are excellent, unfortunately.

So we all hear that Facebook is a terrible place to be and that no one should have one, etc. etc. So I was thinking- what exactly is the reason that facebook is so bad? If someone uses it only to keep in touch with friends and they only post appropriate pictures and they are not addicted, what exactly is so bad about it?

Thanks!
