Im looking for a shadchan that is open minded and knows guys that are from out of town with an out of town mentality but yet deals with frum people who learn and work at the same time. I also dont believe in this business where they charge thousands of dollars!!! do these people think that people are growing money in the garden??? I want someone that will treat a shidduch as a shidduch and not a buisness deal. If anyone has names and phone numbers that would be great.

I dont get it. Do they sell shadchanim in the local hypermarket? I guess you get what you pay for!

If the famous saying “Pay peanuts and you’ll get monkeys” is true, I would be put off a cheap shadchan. Who wants to marry a monkey? (unless you shtam from darwin!)

In my times, you didnt choose a shadchan. The guy who succeeds in suggesting the right match, gets paid for his/her services. It wasnt something you could choose.

    #1166145

yaff80: What a sensitive response! Nice.

It just so happens that Meir Applebaum of Torah tapes has made about 100 more difficult shidduchim, and has always refused pay. There are others as well.

(This doesn’t detract from the wonderful shadchonim who do it for the Mitzvah, but take their fair pay)

why not call shadchanim from out of town places, connected to out of town yeshivos where the guys also take college classes?

    #1166147

yaff80, you obviously haven’t ever been in the parsha or not in it for long. A little sensitivity could take you far in life.

My suggestion would be to make really good friends (who truly care about you and) whose husbands have good friends that they can set you up with.

So sad:( I just posted a HUGE list of shadchanim (haven’t heard of most of them) but I guess the mods didn’t want to let it through. I’m sorry!

PS- who calls the shadchanim for you; you or a parent? I call for myself but I’m wondering what to do if it’s a male shadchan. Can I call anyway?

I don’t think that’s fair. Do you have any ides how much time they spend on shidduchim? Are they not entitled to make a parnassa? There’s nothing wrong with your question; you’re entitled to look for a less expensive shadchan if you want, but not to demean those working hard to set up Jewish homes who are fully entitled to make a living.

DY: It didn’t sound demeaning to me. To paraphrase HKB”H to Yaakov, “kach onim h’umlollos?”

Can anyone post an updated list, if there is one, of Shadchanim who deal with “Black Hat” boys who are learning and going to college, in the New York area?

Otherwise any names and numbers of current Shadchanim will be appreciated. Thanks.

I think some shadchanim had objected to having their numbers posted in the past

OK, how about just suggesting Shadchanim’s names here, and I’ll ask around and get the numbers?

I’m interested – how much does the average shadchan charge if one of his/her couples gets married? What’s the going rate?

Then I suppose you don’t people who do shadchanus for a living.

Look, I didn’t have a shadchan. I met Eees on my own. But if that wasn’t an option and I had to obtain the services of a professional, I would certainly think that they should be paid for their time and effort. Why should a shadchan be any different than anyone else providing a service to you?

If your definition of off the derech is “meeting your spouse by yourself,” then yes, I’m off the derech.

In that case, I have always wanted to be off the derech but haven’t managed to yet. I didn’t realize going off the derech was so difficult…
