My wife came home from a shiur and told me you’re allowed to make brewed coffee on shabbos.

    Can I trust her kashrus?

What does it mean by “make brewed coffee”?

    Boiling water?
    Instant coffee?
    Filtered?

Using a pour over with water from a kli shlishi (irui kli sheini, actually) might be muttar according to some (certainly not all), but I don’t think it would taste very good.

Starbucks Via is excellent, and less than 50¢ per cup if you buy it in Costco when they have a “coupon”. You should also use irui kli sheini for that, but it’s very good.

There’s an audio shiur on yutorah.org given by Rabbi Aryeh Lebowitz in which this is discussed. It’s called “Ten Minute Halacha – Filtering Coffee and French Press on Shabbos and Yom Tov.”

Yes..as it is base on a halachah in Siman Shin Yud Tes Sif Tes and Yud. I asked about this Pesach time. Basically, the coffee grounds are in the filter before Shabbos and pour water from a Kli Shlishi over it.

Dass – you might have avoided the issue of ‘bishul’ but there is no way to go around the issue of ‘borer ‘ by using a filter, as its exact as described in the Talmud Shabbos perek Tolin…

Gaon, it might be comparable to the case of pouring water over wine sediments to extract the flavor.

I used to think it’s definitely borer, but now I hear why perhaps it wouldn’t be.

Goan – The mechaber disagrees. He states in 319:9 that as long as the sediments (in this case the coffee grounds) are prepared before Shabbos it is Muttar to pour water over it. (as explained by my LOR when I discussed this issue with him during Chol Hamoed). Prior to pouring the water it is not a mixture and it never becomes a mixture.

Is the question about coffee or whether to listen to and trust your wife?

Lowertuition, I don’t think those who are mattir would stipulate that the grinds must be in the filter before Shabbos.

DY: The psak I was given from my Rav was to have the coffee grounds in the filter before shabbos. I don’t know about poskim.

    DY,

Is Starbucks Via better than brewed coffee regarding bishul?

Did you ever try the Starbucks Via?

My posek allowed it using irui kli sheini (which has a din of kli shlishi), but doesn’t allow tea bags in a kli shlishi. I didn’t ask him about pour over coffee, but I assume it’s the same as tea.

I believe the metzius of Via is different than regular coffee grounds.

It might also be different than other instant coffees, but even on that, irui kli sheini is recommended.

I thought Via was just coffee ground very finely so it dissolves. I could be wrong.

I’ve never tried it. I’m fine with Taster’s Choice

Via is not coffee grounds. Coffee grounds don’t dissolve. Instant coffees are coffee made from coffee beans and then dehydrated into coffee concentrate (simplified explanation)
    Via is an instant coffee.

Via is described as “instant and microground coffee”. The question is the bishul of the microground part.

    Daas –
“My posek allowed it using irui kli sheini (which has a din of kli shlishi), but doesn’t allow tea bags in a kli shlishi. I didn’t ask him about pour over coffee, but I assume it’s the same as tea.”
It sure is the same or even worse, as the reason your Posek doesn’t allow a Kli Shlishi that he is chosesh to the Aruch haShulchan that upholds that the process of tea even in a Kil Shlishi is considered “gmar’ bishul or Bishul Kal” that these fall into a different category that even a Kli Shilishi is considered bishul. Whereas, instant coffee is already “cooked” processed.
However, the Igros Moshe strongly disagrees with the Aruch HaShulchan; a) that nowhere do we find that a Kli Shlishi can be considered any way as bishul. b) Also, being that even if you leave tea in cold water it will process, so its not the “cooking”…
Now, i’m not sure about ground coffee, as coffee if left in a “cold brew” for many hours it will brew as well..

    It’s also a Mishnah Berurah.

We’re talking about non instant coffee.

Both tea and coffee will “brew” if soaked long enough.
