Ever since I started learning about Judaism, I noticed that Israel’s emblem contains a 7 branch menorah, not the chanukiah (which everyone, including tons of Jews) call a menorah.

I understand that the 7 branch was in the Temple and depicted on the Arch of Titus. I’m considering buying a 7 branch menorah for my house., as well as one for my rabbi as a gift. He’s a member of Aish. Could he accept such a gift?

In light of what I’ve read here:

    Links removed

*note that last link “Many synagogues display either a menorah or an artistic representation of a menorah.”

What is the correct answer of what I can buy on sites judaicawebstore, worldofjudaica, ajudaica, and menorah, all with .com at the end? I also notice some of the sites have just 7 branch menorahs, and others have 7 branch “Jerusalem” menorahs. Others are 12 tribes. Which ones are most permissible in either of our houses?

If you’re afraid that a gift to your Rabbi might be inappropriate, you should not rely solely on the advice of any Coffee Room member.

This is really the type of issue that you should discuss with…..your Rabbi.

what about for myself in my own house? Can I have one and it be ‘kosher,’ and if so, which type of 7 branch menorah?

I would still say you should discuss it with your Rabbi
