Go to a park. That’s what most people I know do. It’s inexpensive and Kosher and works for all ages.

Astroland, kids love rides. Central Pk zoo, great for adults and kids. Watch them feeding the seals. Watch feeding the penguins. Or you could take your kids to the beis medrash and learn. OK OK so I made a joke.

I think it really matters where you live. Id give different answers for NY, Florida or Israel

There are parks everywhere – that’s why I figured it was a good generic answer.

take them to a nursing home or assisant living home to wish each person a gut yom tov & a refuah shleima & at the same time be mechanech them:

1)on the mitzva of bikkur cholim

2)how to appreciate your life & every part & vain of your body working in health B”H

It also matters what ages your kids are and how influenced they are by their peers. If all of Shmerel’s classmates are going to theme parks, he may not be too happy about going to the neighborhood playground.

Bringing small children to a nursing home is a very bad idea. I visit them often and there are people there with various forms of dimensia who act and say things that might be very scary for children.

While it is admirable to want to teach children to do chessed and mitzvoh, not all are appropirate for everyone

Isn’t there work around the house to be done? Windows need washing? Carpets need to be vacuumed? Dishes washed, dried, and put away? Beds made? Furniture dusted? Is all the food prepared yet for Shabbat and chag? Potatoes and carrots peeled? Cabbage stuffed? Onions chopped?

Don’t let your kids think that life is a free ride – put them to work.

“If all of Shmerel’s classmates are going to theme parks, he may not be too happy about going to the neighborhood playground” -and he’d probably be really unhappy about going to the nursing home (if it’s the only Chol Hamoed trip). I would probably take the kids to something fun on Chol Hamoed and do the nursing home on Shabbos or Yomtov or in addition to the fun trip, but not instead of.

But I’m not sure I agree that Shmerel would be unhappy about going to the neighborhood park – that would depend on numerous factors such as how you have been raising your kids until now, does he have other friends going to the park, how old he is and how fun you are able to make it. A lot of the fun comes from the presentation. I also wouldn’t advise going to the NEIGHBORHOOD playground – that would not be an outing. The point is to get in the car and TRAVEL to a park you don’t usually go to.
