I remember reading an interesting story about R. Kanievsky who determined that someone sitting at a shabbos table wasn’t jewish because he did not eat cholent.

    #671017

    chOlent!!

    #671018

    or CHOLNT is actually preferable

We haven’t had a formal poll here in a long time. I wonder if the boss (YW Editor) would run one on this topic (the correct spelling of cholent). I’m not going to approach his highness directly. (We know what happened last time someone tried that) but as we know he sees all on YW.

I offer to be the korbon:

    Dear Sir Editer,

With all due respect, there has been a request put in to take a YWN poll on the official spelling of Chulent.

It is obviously spelled as stated above, but for some strange reason we are experiencing opposition from none other then an esteemed moderator!

Please squelch this uprising at the start so that we do not need to deal with any un-pleasantries later on.

    Very respectfully yours,

    – areivim

What is the origin for the word chulent?

(I think I once heard it explained, but can’t think of it.)

whoops… sorry about that. as a “lurker” i should have known to pick a different mane.

and i think it means hot. (like how “nonchalant” means cool)

    #671027

I have no idea what the Editor is talking about, but notice how the final arbiter of all things on YW spelled CHOLENT.

    WITH AN O !!

Wow! Mod 80, I guess you were right – Sir Editor does “see all” on YWN!

But does he know all? The origin of the word?

    Mee la’Chulent aylaiy!

Luckily I passed the Moderation Restraint Course with Advanced Lab.

I am trying so hard not to edit these posts. I may need some counseling. (Or a 2 week vacation.)…80

Would any discussion of this culinary delight be complete without a reference to Country Yossi’s classic song?

Everybody now! “Cholent! Cholent! Ch-ch-ch-cholent cholent…”

(I am alternating spelling for the sake of shalom.)

Mod 80 – LOL!!! I’d say that 2 week vacation would probably be a good idea for you… 😉

BTW, did everyone stop posting on this thread because a female started “singing”? If so, please mochel me :p I will endeavor to restrain myself though it won’t be easy. (I really like that song)

alternating spelling? Is someone playing tricks?

I think it depends on your affiliation. The chasiddim would call it chUlent, the litvaks, chOlent. Sfardim? You?
