Just starting to plan for Purim…
How do I check the ingredients of an eye product to see if it’s safe for lips or vice versa? I’m thinking of trying a full face tie dye look with red, blue and yellow lipsticks and eyeshadows.

Who said that stuff is tzniusdik, even for Purim?

Why is it different from a clown costume?

Perhaps because the coloring is on the body. But who said even a clown costume is okay?

The coloring for this costume (head to toe tie dye) is about the same as a typical clown costume (colorful clothes, colorful wig, painted face). Why didn’t you complain last Purim, when a lot of people wore clown costumes?

You could make your own dye from natural sources, e.g. fruits, vegetables, grass, leaves. There’s plenty of time to experiment.

Wear a clown mask, and don’t obsess. Such a gross makeup is like a tattoo, forbidden.

DovidBT, natural sources (such as those you describe) are not tested for skin safety. Ready now, you are not my rav, a clown mask would make the person wearing the costume look like a clown, don’t you ever insult my art, and don’t tell me how to live my life.

RebYidd23 When you came to CR to ask about “ingredients”, I thought al pi Torah, “do not place a stumbling block before the blind”.
So I thought “a tattoo”, but also now this, with regards to makeup-” A woman must not wear men’s clothing, nor a man wear women’s clothing, for the Lord your God detests anyone who does this. Deuteronomy 22:5,” You are a man? Yes, I think.
Could I be your Rav? No. So “don’t you ever insult my art, and don’t tell me how to live my life” is rebellious, inaccurate and childish. You are insulted by “obsess” , but look at it as growth. I too have to try to stop obsessing about some things, and I am not ashamed to admit it. So don’t take it too hard, most people obsess, just about everyone does.

    1. What made you think tattoo?
    2. There are plenty of frum male clowns who paint their faces.
    3. I never said it was for me to wear.
    4. The word “obsess” isn’t what bothered me. You called my idea gross, and that was very rude. You also compared it to a clown mask.

1)Tatto, as an unnatural addition to the skin. Like a full face makeup for a man.
    2) Maybe those frum clowns are wrong.
    3) If not for you to wear, then for what other person are you suggesting what could possibly be an aveira?
    4) Gross was meant as “large” (full face) as in the French for “big”.
    5) Incidentally, the theatre and its attributes are banned by Torah. So this makeup for men can easily be under the heading of “cross-dressing” or “do not visit their circuses” let alone make one yourself.
6)You can get a white half face mask and use texts to color it as you wish.If you can’t find a blank one, get another one and reverse it and color that blank side.

    1. A tattoo is an indelible design on the skin. Same for a man or for a woman. Not just an unnatural addition to the skin. A clown mask is also an unnatural addition to the skin.
    2. That’s not what my rav says. Sorry.
    3. None of your business.
    4. That’s just really awkward language.
    5. By that logic, all purim costumes are assur.
    6. I can’t afford that, and also, it is not good for people with a phobia of masks.

rebyid, a flat upper face mask, much like spectacles or sun-glasses will be tolerated by most people-the mouth is free and the flat white paper can be painted, easy.

It doesn’t matter if it’s a full or half mask–seeing someone peel off what the brain reads as a layer of skin is nauseating.
Also, would it make you feel better if I call it face paint?

    nauseating? so don’t peel.
Face paint is make up, right?
Let’s not feud, save all our energy for Purim.

You started it by criticizing me instead of answering the question. And if you don’t remove the mask, ever, you’re a clown forever.

Rebyid, Many cosmetics have in them nanoparticles which some say could be adversely affecting health.
Google these words exactly “make a mask from a paper plate” and the do the same with “How to Make a Mask using Paper Plates”. They show 2 different styles to make and one has a video on how to make a half mask. Google these words exactly “tie dyed paper plates” to see the variety under “images” and “shopping”.
Either buy white PAPER plates with the sell-like indentations around the edges and see if the plates can be painted by you (they may possibly have a plastic coating) OR buy ready coloured tie-dyed disposable plates, just make sure they do not have all the colours of the rainbow, because we are not allowed to reproduce a rainbow. Some plates I saw are vibrant, some are subtle.
Then you can make 2 masks from each plate, just follow the pattern you chose, and you can attach them to a stick or else link 2 small holes at the edges of each mask with a string to go around the back of the head.
You could also make big ears to attach to the top of the mask with staples, and you will have a multi-colored li

And the question wasn’t about cosmetics in general, it was of lip and eye safety.

ok… ignoring all the putting @rebyidd23 down and all,

    @rebyidd23
    – the best way (imo) to know if its safe for you is to test it out on your arm, even if it is eye safe, you can still react to it,
I would suggest using face paint as it seems like it will be a much easier (and more cost efficient) way of getting the look you are trying to create

Rebyid -” 3. None of your business.”
Rebyid- “Ready now, have I not made it clear enough that I can’t stand masks?”

So Rebyid, no you did not make it clear, but the whole question is bizarre as it appears to be based on a preconceived understanding about which you are reluctant to have a reasonable discussion. (don’t get upset, no one wants to offend you, including me)

Thanks. The reason for using lipsticks and eyeshadows is because I may be able to use mistake lipsticks and eyeshadows that people I know bought, didn’t like and couldn’t return.

makes sense… just be careful that the makeup is good if it isn’t new- eyeshadows last, and you can sanitize it really easily by spraying alcohol over it. for the lipstick, your probably best off rubbing off the top layer of it, and if it has a atypical smell (plastic etc…) just dump it right away

Dying one’s skin with berries could stain it for a days or more.

Also, Purim is during the spring time. Who wants to be attracting bees and other insects?
