    Through genetic engineering and stuff?

Yes, particularly in sweet jelly form.

That plots sounds familiar. The science behind that imaginative piece of fiction was not very plausible.

When I saw the title of this thread, I thought that the OP was asking if, in the days of Moshiach, we’ll be able to pick dinosaurs off of a tree like we would with clothes and stuff. Forget dinosaurs – I would want a unicorn.

I don’t understand why people are not taking the question seriously. If we have dinosaur DNA (or a preserved wooly mammoth in ice) we could clone them. The trick would be the surrogate mother (elephants have been suggested). For those interested, the Tiferes Yisroel on mishnayos has, after Sanhedrin, a fascinating piece on dinosaur bones (which were discovered during his time) and in particular Wooley Mammoths (discovered in Baltimore!).

Dinosaurs probably not, but maybe other extinct animals like a Wooly Mammoth or Dodo Bird

Dinosaurs are still around, and all around us. Not the larger species, and not the toothed species. But the smaller beaked and winged ones. Iy”H I’m planning to have baked dinosaur with rice and potatoes tonight, and dinosaur schnitzel on Shabbos day.

I apologize. The Mammoth was not a dinosaur and did not live during the Mesozoic era when the dinosaurs ruled the Earth. Mammoths were actually a member of the Eliphantidae family.

With the current immorality of the world stretching itself to match the times of the flood, based on the Medrash that the immoral nature of mankind affected the animals and their relationships which lead them to breed mixed creatures, we should have our very own exciting Dino’s very soon.

Maybe we could try, and use a lizard or something for a surrogate, but the bigger question is SHOULD we? I say no.

Avram, those don’t count. Everyone know what it means to bring dinosaurs to life: the fun, exciting ones. Like T-Rex and Triceratops. Not the boring ones like the dodo.
If we brought the dinosaurs into existence based on existing skeletons but using genetic engineering and imagination instead of actual dinosaur DNA, they don’t have to be “authentic”. They just have to have similar bone structure and leave similar footprints. Maybe we can give them long floppy dog ears.
For non-kosher customers, we can make dinosaur meat into little chicken-shaped nuggets.

Get into it with an angry Canadian goose, and you’ll change your opinion quickly. They hiss, strike, have long necks, and pretty terrifying teeth (including on the tongue). Dinosaur.

I’m not a biologist, but I think a lot of traits associated with your fun dinosaurs still exist within the DNA of birds. Genetic engineering , for example, may be able to produce a toothy attack chicken with a sauropod-like tail. But instead of roaring as it rampages through the village, it’ll go bok bok bok bok BWAAAAAK!

Can we please stop having posted based on evolutionary thought? I know that no one here would say that they believe in evolution, but if you don’t then you aren’t having “dinosaur chicken”, it is chicken, which is all that it ever was (and the chicken came first, not the egg). “a lot of traits associated with your fun dinosaurs still exist within the DNA of birds” – please realize what you are saying.

Oh, and what does that Tiferes Yisrael have to do with anything? (He does mention dinosaur bones but… so?)

Avram, just because they’re scary doesn’t mean they’re fun. Much of the fun comes from the idea that the dinosaurs are huge. The largest birds that are known to have walked the planet as the same time as humans are extinct too.
Apatosaurus pot roast sounds like a delicious dish that we can’t eat because we keep kosher.

curious: evolution / Hashem-guided changes – what’s the difference? Have you done any serious research on this? Rabbi Gottlieb books / lectures? Did you go read the Tiferes Yisroel? He was ecstatic when they found dinosaur bones because FINALLY the Medrash that says the world was created / destroyed, created / destroyed 364 times, now makes sense.

By the way, even if you don’t believe chickens evolved from dinosaurs, you should at least consider that they were domesticated from red junglefowl, and so the egg came first.

Without DNA its unlikely any extinct Animals could be resurected. We have DNA for Wooly Mammoths and Maybe Dodo Birds. We do not have DNA for Dinosaurs

According to current theories, dinosaurs did not become extinct, they just became smaller. Most Yidden eat them on Shabbos evening for dinner.

We can’t resurrect the dinosaurs, but perhaps we could make new ones with the creative freedom granted to us by the lack of details about what dinosaurs are like. And a bird is a dinosaur like an avocado is a berry.

It’s not enough to have some dinosaur DNA to clone a dinosaur- you need an intact genome, all the chromosomes arranged in the proper way in an appropriate carrier – the nucleus of an actual cell. If say, you had a dinosaur egg with genome intact you could theoretically activate it and transfer it to some surrogate, but you can’t just take a few snippets of DNA found in some fossil and randomly insert them into some other specie’s egg and expect to get a dinosaur. And you can’t modify a bird genome to express dinosaur traits unless you know the sequence of dinosaur genes encoding those traits- which we don’t.
Anyway, if Hashem wanted us to live side by side with Dinosaurs, he would a) not have destroyed them in previous worlds or according to other opinions, b) created the actual creature and not just the fossil.

RebYidd people already do make dinosaurs the same way they make cars- in factories on machines, using plastic and other man-made materials. check out the shelves in the toy stores, you’ll find many inanimate models.

I didn’t post anything on evolutionary thought. Do you think there’s no such thing as DNA?

I know that no one here would say that they believe in evolution, but if you don’t then you aren’t having “dinosaur chicken”, it is chicken

I’m not claiming there ever was something called a dinosaur chicken. I’m saying that chickens are dinosaurs. And tasty.

Why not apply genetic engineering in ways that are more useful?

    Examples:

Giant, 80-foot-high cattle. Slaughter one, and you have enough beef for ten thousand pots of cholent, and enough leather to make 100 sets of gassos tefillin.

Huge, ergonomically designed birds that can carry people. Not only practical, but safe. How often do you hear about birds crashing into each other?

Because those are more useful but also less fun.

What could be more fun than flying on a giant bird? You could even fly between the legs of the giant cows.

First of all, that the chicken came first is a gemara in R”H on daf 11: – Likomasan Nivrau, they were created fully formed.

Second, without basing anything on evolution there is no reason to call chickens dinosaurs.

And, while this isn’t the place to argue about evolutionary theory fitting in with the Torah, I just have to ask: why do you want to believe in evolution? Because you definitely can’t convince me that by purely going through Chazal you came out that that was Chazal’s maskana.

Also, genetic engineering allows us to play with biology a bit, but it doesn’t let us defy mechanics.

hmm..an 80 ft high cow- would have to have a very strong heart and circulatory system to pump blood that high, and yet have a way that blood vessels would not burst from such high blood pressure. Bones would have to be strong enough to support such a large body. digestive system would have to handle eating enough food for such a large animal. that’s a lot of genetic engineering.

    Curious1000,

Second, without basing anything on evolution there is no reason to call chickens dinosaurs.

Why? It’s just simple categorization. If we had never seen a chicken, but instead found a chicken fossil, it’d be categorized as an avian dinosaur.
