What do you think of the captain of the ship that went down recently(reminds me of titanic-inside joke)? Should a captain leave his ship in a dangerous situation or stick with it? Also should women and children be saved before the men? I'd appreciate a torah perspective though all opinions are welcome.

The halacha, as stated in Shulchan Aruch, says you save men first.

sushe: you're right about men before women but what about before children? Also the halacha is adressing yidden. Would the same apply to saving goyim?

For the same reason men are first, yehudim are saved first. And it would also seem a godol chayiv in mitzvos would be saved before a koton.

that's why there's a shidduch crisis. if pple adhere to halacha and not emotions then the men will be saved first according to halacha and we'll have more of those creatures in the world.

All things being equal that is the halacha.
Since they were so close to shore, the ability for a man to survive in the water a little longer than a child and/or a woman, and that the chance of dying is less than 1 in 100, it would be highly debatable whether the whole concept of "saved" comes in to play. Therefore, there would be a strong argument that in this case, it would OK L'Halacha to aid children and women first.

There was a pretty detailed halachic analysis of the issue on Gil Student's blog. (no Link). Notwithstanding the halachic issue of whom to evacuate first, I think we can all agree that the Captain was a jerk. I mean, "I tripped and fell into a life boat". Puleeeze.
