does anyone know where is the closest place for a beginner to try cross country skiing neear the tri-state area?? i want to try it but dont want to travel too far....

You don't have to go far. All you need is a trail that isn't plowed.

The closest location that has groomed trails, ski rentals, and lessons is Fahnestock Winter Park, about an hour north of the city right off the Taconic State Parkway. It is a state park; I highly recommend it. I've seen other frum families there. Their web site is http://www.roberts-1.com/fwp/. I would also very much recommend lessons for beginners.

I think the rocking horse ranch offers day passes that will let you try lots of things, if the x-country skiing is not what you expect it to be (I think its easy enough to learn, but really tough from an aerobic standpoint)
