I’m at a dinner tonight. First they sang the star spangled banner. So I stood up. Then they sang Hatikva, so I stayed standing. Then I sat down. But they started saying tehillim. (?) So I stayed sitting.

My sister-in-law gave me grief. I said, “I stood for Obama, I stood for the tzionim, I also need to stand for Hashem?”

I wanted to eat nuts and shmooze with my brother.

Notice also, how it was my brother’s wife and not my wife who got on my case. My wife knows better.

I was once at an aufruf in the Mir, one of the roshei yeshiva was talking and everybody was being very attentive. Rb Chaim Shmuel Lopian z”l though was enjoying his apple strudel, I was very impressed by this (although I never have understood anything he says on shev shmatsah)

did she get on your brother’s case too? (I’m guessing not, b/c she knows better too)

In general when you go somewhere where you are expected to shut up and behave, it is sufficient to follow the rules for the first three events e.g. shabbos morning shacharis, leining, mussaf. You should stand for both national anthems, and the tehillim. Shmooze during the speeches. You aren’t listening anyway.

I can’t shmooz during the speeches; that when I post here.

    #1082311

popa, you cant be serious. that’s awful. i feel bad that that’s the way you think.

    #1082313

You guys don’t have to take popa seriously. Ever heard of a troll?

    #1082315

    what’s a tehillim performance?

something specific to the US or do we have those, too?

    PBA,

you still didn’t answer my question,

and anyway if you really want a heter I can tell you that since the group you were in didn’t give chashivus for saying Tehillim (they sand HaTikvah before it) then you didn’t need to either, so you wouldn’t need to be Yotzei Min Haklal

    Yes, I still have it.

Tehillim performance is when people say tehillim so that everyone will be proud of them for saying tehillim.

I wanted to eat nuts and shmooze with my brother.

So it has nothing really to do with standing or sitting during tehillim but everything to do with saying with or ignoring tehillim

This dinner, b”h had neither tehillim nor hatikva.

    Unfortunately, it still has speeches.

Luckily, there is separate seating so I can drink as much as the guy next to me who I just met likes

This thread is really upsetting me. There is trolling, and then there is trolling like this. This form of trolling makes me sick. How could someone speak so dismissively of tehillim? Something is wrong with this.

Popa, whoever you are- heres a message from someone that cares about you: Someday, you will stand before a heavenly court and they will ask you how you could speak this way of the safer tehillim. What are you going to answer them? I understand that you feel the need to troll. But this thread is going beyond all limits! Somewhere under that tough exterior of yours is a neshama. Take good care of it cuz its your most valuable belonging.

    the-art-of-moi,

This thread is really upsetting me

Whenever popa_bar_abba trolling appears sacrilegious on the surface, there is usually something going on under the surface, a subtle point he’s trying to make.

I don’t think popa_bar_abba is objecting to saying tehillim. It sounds to me that he feels like these events he’s going to are cheapening the tehillim by sandwiching them between national anthems and speeches, and treating them as a performance to be watched rather than a service of the heart. His posts are essentially mirroring the attitude towards the tehillim that these events engendered, which is a form of satire.

The fact that he doesn’t explain the satire and lets the denizens go nuts with outrage is what brings his satire to the pedestal of trolling.

PBA – sorry if I’m ruining your fun 🙂

Thank you for the explanation. I still think there are more appropriate ways to make a point, though. Don’t sacrifice the kavod of tehillim so easily.

Incidentally, the dinner this week had neither tehillim, nor pledge to obama, nor pledge to the tzionim…nor nuts on the table. So it seems there was an intended correlation there that they were for eating during those events.

I know many of the early talmidim and I don’t believe you are one of them. Either way you can’t be a true talmid of the Moshgiach because his strict stance against internet use is well known and I doubt a talmid would have the chutzpah to so disregard his Rebbe. Most of his mispallelim don’t even have Internet and have Kosher phones. Additionally a talmid of the Moshgiach would not waste his time here typing ridiculous and many times Halachically and Hashkafically inappropriate things. You can say you once learned by him but ddon’t be motzi laaz by calling yourself a talmid.

My brother lives and breathes Rav Wolfson. I only wish he didn’t have internet. Not that he does anything he shouldn’t, but he lives alone and it’s not recommended.
