Anyone who suffers from being overweight was just slighted and insulted by Oorah. Have they no shame? Is everything a big FAT joke?

They make fun of every other Tzedakah in their latest video. Who doe they think they are?

Who is the Rov who actually signs off on this insanity?

    Shame on them.

    THE VIDEO:

OK, I was ready to exit this thread without comment because it’s totally uninteresting, but…

This caused me to go down an Oorah rabbit hole… They’re the ones behind Kars4Kids?!?!?!?!

Those commercials play on the most local of radio stations in the middle of goyishe nowhere! How is this not the richest Jewish organization on earth?

Joseph, is this ad zilzul hashem or chillul hashem?
Is it ok to sing rap or does it fall into a catagory of minhag hamakom?

I just think it’s gross, not batamt, and goyish. But hey, it’ll sell, and that’s what they care about.

Sorry, but the entire concept is goyish. I am so offended by the burying into gashmiyus that I refuse to donate a single penny to this organization. I was always bothered by the huge expenses they incur with their overly lavish and costly ad campaigns. To be honest, some have actually been interesting. But this is not tzedokoh. I do not even care whether they consider is cost effective for them. It is plainly disgusting, and has absolutely nothing in common with a Torah set of values.

This next statement is nasty, but here goes. I hope everyone else is so offended by this that we collectively lodge our revulsion, and withhold money from them until this goyish set of values stops. I am not making a statement about the organization, just the campaign.

I understand why people would be offended by this, but if anything, Lose4Autism (and Oorah itself) should be offended, because this entire ad campaign is just making fun of them.

I’m gonna bring another angle into this. I’m not upset at making fun of lose4autism… I understand that it’s a Purim joke. They’re making fun of what lose4autism is all about though, which is our autistic kids.
There are some lines that we just don’t cross and making fun of special needs is one of those lines!!

Do you honestly think that you and all the coffee room readers are gonna put an end to oorah? They’re sitting on millions of dollars by our dear goyishe neighbors others who are foolishly donating their cars (and real estate) to kars4kids!! The only way to put a stop to this madness is find incriminating evidence of where these MILLIONS are disappearing to.

And I wish you good luck because no lawsuit against them ever got anywhere

The video is full of fat jokes. It’s making fun of the extreme fund-raising campaigns, and it contains the lyrics “even though they’ll probably just spend it on an ad”

I’m seriously overweight and I found it really funny. I don’t care for weight loss contests so I really don’t mind someone making fun of lose4autism. Those fake contests were really creative. It’s hard to think of something more gross than licking adhesive stamps. I loved all the realistic marketing materials, and how they said that they have to keep thinking of new ways of getting money from gvirim. I only heard two fat jokes and one of them was just making fun of Chris Christie. Poor singer/rapper. His mouth must have felt totally gross from the adhesive.

    Still not getting it.

-Talking about eating a lot of food is a fat joke?

-“Extreme fundraising” is not intended to be serious, it’s supposed to attract attention. What’s wrong with joking about that?

-There’s something wrong with oorah making fun of themselves in their own video?

The real irony is that a rant like this will no doubt just get them more publicity

I think most people with a small sense of humor can appreciate this. I don’t think it brings down bike4chai or lose4autism at all.

But i’m a fan of Oorah’s work too – so that probably puts me at odds with most commentators here. I’m part of their Torah Mates program (A weekly kiruv chavrusah for a few years now) and I’ve been to an Oorah holiday retreat at their upstate campus. I’ve seen their work first hand, and I can’t help but be really impressed.

I don’t understand the hatred that some commentators here have for Oorah.

I donate to Bike4Chai every year. This year I will Eat4Oorah too.

    Meno,

    1. No, but there are such jokes in the video. I can’t point them out because I am unable to see the video on the computer I’m using right now, and I’ve forgotten the specifics.
    2. People who do take extreme fundraising seriously now might think that all the money raised by these campaigns is spent on ads, when really it’s only about 85%.
    3. To us, no. To them, yes.

About the more publicity, people who are offended probably don’t mind that. They’d rather get more publicity but get Oorah to make a statement.

Do you even know what the halochos of chilul Hashem are?
Did you check, read sefarim, and ask a Rav possibly if this constitutes a chilul hashem before making that assumption.

    Also, it’s a joke.
If anyone thinks this is serious, even goyim, they must need mental help.

All of their recent ad campaigns have been very real and vital to their success. and while I am dizzy from pogoing and my tongue is dry from all the stamp licking Nobody has the right to make fun of our wonderful campaigns!

    Me123:

Why would you want a lawsuit to work against them? I’m not asking rhetorically; I don’t know much about this organization and I don’t understand why Jews would dislike them.

I don’t see how kars4kids is doing anything wrong under American law. Kars4OrthodoxJewishKids certainly doesn’t sound as nice. Many if not most charities are associated with some religion, and are not required to state so in every ad campaign.

From the ethical standpoint, yeah, we weren’t born yesterday. Clearly they’re advertising in locations where people have never even met an Orthodox Jew in hopes of tricking them (this isn’t an argument in court). Who cares though? As long as they’re doing good work, why not tap into goyishe donors who wouldn’t otherwise give?

I was responding to Tlik. Getting the ywn coffee room readers to stop donating to oorah won’t bring them down. They’re sitting on MILLIONS of dollars. I responded to him that if he really wants to bring down oorah he needs to figure out a way of suing them and it gas to be original because they’ve been in many lawsuits before and they’re still scamming away!!

Refer back to Tlik above post

People who feel offended don’t have to justify their feelings to make them real. They don’t get veto power, but they should at least be heard.

No they shouldn’t. America is sick of crybabies! Go cry in a corner on your own; nobody cares about your feelings! This is 2018. America is supposed to be great again!

Is it not possible that this whole thread is a Purim schtick? Because the entire idea of this ad being a Chillul hashem seems like a joke to me.

“A joke is something that’s funny.”

The teller thought it was funny.

“If 1 person gets insulted that’s called making fun!!! ”

Only in the eyes of the insulted person. the teller thinks it was a funny joke, unless the teller is in the habit of telling boring, stupid jokes.

“Purim doesn’t mean that people don’t have feelings!”

    Therefore?

    #1475307

    A 3rd thing – those charities probably aren’t using
their funds to provide religious services (etc).

    #1475305

Many if not most charities are associated with some religion,
and are not required to state so in every ad campaign.

True, but it’s probably safe to assume that those charities don’t
focus on giving specifically to people of their religion, and don’t
have the explicit goal of getting people to practice their religion.

    #1475303

I found myself trying to convince family members that
the campaign was a joke (last week, before the video).

Yeah, it’s time to give up. The internet mob has spoken consistently for years: when easily offended people get offended at a silly, harmless joke, it makes the joke more funny not less.

    #1475483
    Neville ChaimBerlin

Random: I totally agree with you, but I don’t know that any of those points would matter in a civil court.

As far as ethically, yes there are surely many goyim who would willingly give their clunkers to better the education of children, but would suddenly revoke that willingness if they knew those children were Orthodox Jews. Are you bothered if those particular people are misled into donating to a good cause? I’m not.
