So I was at Costco tonight and purchased a soda at the snack counter and was given a dime too much in change what would you do?

    A) give it back to the cashier

    B) leave it on the counter stealthily

    C) Pocket it thinking its a pittance from a mega large corporation

Which would you do and why or would you do something else?

I would cut off 10 cents worth of cup and give it back to the cashier. Its free refills after all, so I don’t mind paying for a smaller cup.

Give it back to the cashier – don’t think you’re giving it back because you want the recognition, and the cashier thinks you’re the greatest thing since sliced bread. Give it back because it’s a kiddush Hashem. The cashier will be impressed with your human decency and attribute it to your Yiddishe upbringing.

    you know goq,

i was actually in a supermarket (non jewish) and i went to a self checkout and asked for 5 dollars cash back, and out popped a 50. (i guess it got there by accident) so i went to customer service to exchange it. when i got there they were more than happy to exchange it. when i got back to yeshiva (ner yisrael) i asked R’ Aharon Feldman and he told me i should’ve got more people involved to make a bigger kiddush hashem

Is it a Kiddush Hashem to act like an attention seeker?

HaLeiVi, I was wondering the same thing. I assume he meant in a way which would not be obvious.

    The Goq,

I would do A). The dime in case B) would likely not make it back into the register. For C), it may not mean anything to the corporation, but it could potentially get the cashier into trouble at the end of the day when his/her register doesn’t balance correctly.

Why is this categorized under salad dressings? 😀

I probably would’ve given it back to the cashier, but if that wasn’t possible for whatever reason, maybe I’d donate it. But … is it mine to donate?

Perhaps it was a salad dressing shopping trip?

That was just for laughs, being a cashier myself I know how important it is not to be short in your register so i did give it back to her, when similar things happen to me at work I am very appreciative.

So lets say you go to a restaurant for lunch and you buy a fountain soda that has free refills that you fill yourself, at the end of your meal would one be allowed to refill their cup and take it with them?

    It depends on store policy.

You have to ask the restaurant owner, he may not necessarily check ywn coffee room.

I’m curious what he says, please let us know

Give it back to the cashier. It’s a Kiddush Hashem to do it that way.

Is this like by the Bronx Zoo where you can bring back the cup next time? If so, go ahead.

It may or it may not, There is no way any of us can possibly know. It is completly up to the owner. They can extend till you step out of the store, all day, all month or every year on that same date as long as it isnt a Wednesday. You have to ask him/her.

    #1064149

“Don’t do it for attention, do it for the kiddush hashem” is a non-sequitur. Do it because you are not entitled to the money, so your only option is to return it.

Goq, no such thing as theoretical in that case. It’s simply a matter of store policy.

Veltz Meshugener: That is inaccurate. It isn’t the only halachicly valid option. It is proper though because it is a kiddush Hashem. And only that.

Joseph beat me to the punch. I am frankly astounded at all the posts claiming or insinuating it theft or the like, and it is simply a matter of ethics. To’us akum is muttar legamra. It is a kiddush hashem to return it, therefore you should, but make sure it is noticeable that you are Jewish, or even make it clear that you are returning it because you are Jewish.

    #1064156

Joseph and Neutiquam: The reason you’re wrong is not because ta’us akum is assur. The reason you’re wrong is because you think it’s a kiddush hashem to make the cashier go to the manager and get you a gold star.

Listen at Costco they expect you to take it with you, but a mom and pop restaurant I dont know what the expectations are.

VM: If it isn’t a kiddush Hashem then it is most proper to keep the change.
