I am looking for a frum community with young families near Lakewood. I do not think my family would fit in with the Lakewood crowd but am looking for something nearby due to business. Any suggestions?

You have New York and the rest of New Jersey to the north, and Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington to the south. What’s the problem.

I would highly recommend the Long Branch Elberon community. It is a modern orthodox community accepting of everyone. Our shul which I proudly belong to is a very warm and welcoming community. We do have young familes who attend our local school Yeshiva at the Jersey Shore. We have kosher food right at your doorstep, restaurants, mikvah and an eruv. Our rabbi is phenomenal. Come check out Brothers of Israel in Elberon. We even have a website.

Thank you all for the replies. Passaic or Clifton seems to be over an hour drive. My ideal scenario would be somewhere near Lakewood to cut the commute time as I currently live in Brooklyn now.

Check out Rain Tree. It’s in Lakewood but without the quirks.

Manalapan is 20 minutes from Lakewood and is a BT and/or MO community.

So you or s/o you know lives in Raintree? I don’t live that far away. But Raintree is Ok, but I wouldn’t consider it Modern though.

The other side of the lake near R’ Gissinger’s Shul is more modern.

myls87- are you modern orthodox as some ppl are assuming? or are you more right wing than that or perhaps yeshivish but not quite the lakewood type? that would probably make a difference in what community you look into.

Lakewood is where every Jewish person belongs.

It is an It Hatorah, the center of the universe.

You and your family will fit in if you want. Just breathing the same air that is shared with so many learner is purifying and uplifting.

If you can live in the Kodesh Hakadoshim, why would you want to live michutz lemachane like a tomei mess or a metzorah??

I was in Rain Tree for a shabbos a while back and really enjoyed it. It was chilled out and relaxing. I stayed at friend that loves it there and isn’t yeshivish at all and is even leaning modern.

I have another friend that lives there that isn’t yeshivish that likes it there. My totally unyeshivish brother would live there if his wife would let.

The question remains, what are you looking for?

shmendrick, I presume your post was serious, offensive as it is.

The answer to your question is that, for starters, if you will be a better oveid Hashem elsewhere then you are obligated to NOT live in Lakewood and to live in whatever place that is, much as it would be nice to breathe in the air of all that learning in Lakewood. Yours is a question based on what’s known in learning as an emotional sevara.

I do not consider myself mo-dox. I grew up and live in Flatbush, went to all “regular” yeshivas and am now a working, colored shirt wearing, bal habus who is kovea itim on a daily basis and loves learning.

I think you would fit fine in Rain Tree. But don’t take my word for it, check it out well before you make any decisions.

Is there anyone from that neighborhood in this forum?

    From shmendrick:

“Lakewood is where every Jewish person belongs.

It is an It Hatorah, the center of the universe.”

Now be careful. Where have I heard this before? (a refresher in medievel and contemporary history would be in short order)

Tell me Shmendrick, what do you say in Shmonai Esrai? VeLYerusahlayim Ere’cha or VeLakewood Ere’cha?

I can not answer the OP’s question (I live in Canada). But there are many wonderful Mekomot Torahs in the tri state area (from my travels) to choose from.

Yes there are a lot of sephardim but I belong to a modern orthodox Ashkenaz shul which is very friendly, warm and welcoming. When we came back from California we moved back to the same community because we loved it so much. Yeshiva at the Jersey Shore is an Ashkenaz yeshiva which is phenomenal.

    myls87,

Be smart & stay as far away from Lakewood as you can. The OTD rate for teens is climbing fast. Even for pre-teens. It’s rediculous. And Tznious? Forget about it. The women’s clothing is getting tighter & shorter by the week. Even by the “yeshivisha” people.

And as far as getting your kids in to schools in Lakewood, be prepared to be humiliated and degraded and thrown from one bin to another.

Shmendrick– LOL! Thanks! You gave me my first good belly laugh of the day. First things first. Make sure that the neighborhood is on very high ground, way above sea level. This case you shall IY’H never have to worry about any futures coastal flooding nor hurricanes.

This also shall be a wonderful opportunity to fulfill first hand, the Mitzwah of “vNishmartem Me’od lNafshoseichem”

Lakewood is in a flood zone. I dont think it flooded for Hurricane Sandy, but parts did flood for Hurricane Irene last year

The Torah learning of Lakewood protects the entire city from all calamities.

Reb Moshe was once told that a child was injured by a car in front of his apartment building. He immediately said that the child is not Jewish. When it was discovered that ineed the child was a non-Jew, Reb Moshe said that his learning Torah is a shmirah, and no Jewish child could have gotten hurt in front of his apartment.

Lakewood is a bayis ma’aleh seforim, it has the shemirah of Torah learning which saves from any gashmiyus or ruchniyus danger.

Just as there was no mabul in Eretz Yisroel – it is poshut that there was no flooding in Lakewood!

    “It is an Ir Hatorah”

It was an Ir Hatorah before people who waste their time in the Coffee room moved there.

Living in the Kodesh Hakadoshim requires requires a much higher standard. Most people actually need the down time in the CR or other Kosher diversions.

Most people should realize that their living in the Kodesh Hakadoshim will dilute the intense Kedusha, and not move there.

Josh31 – “Living in the Kodesh Hakadoshim requires requires a much higher standard… Most people should realize that their living in the Kodesh Hakadoshim will dilute the intense Kedusha, and not move there.”

Following the path of your logic you probably would advocate against most yidden moving to Eretz Hakodesh. since it would “dilute the intense kedusha”. The road you follow leads to strange destinations!

On the contrary, the kedushas hamokm uplifts the inhabitants! If someone is lacking kedusha, he should go to a mokom kodosh. In Lakewood the air is full of kedusha, the gravel is walked on by talmidei chachomim, and it is a zchus to walk in their dust. In the supermarket I am mechabed chochomim by letting them check out ahead of me. When driving and arriving at an intersection, I always let the Torah Yidden go ahead of me. And being a Torah Yid and a kollel person, I expect the same courtesy back.

So I’ll give you a picture of me and my car so you can do that to me also. I’m obviously a much bigger Talmid Chochom than you and I proved it in the topic of “saying Good Shabbos on Fri.”

Also, you should support me financially because of my learning which is much better than yours!

Per Mishna near beginning of Kelim there are 10 steps of Kedusha between Eretz Hakodesh and Kodesh HaKodashim.

We (including the Kohen Gadol) are expected to live most of our lives within the lower levels.

Schmendrick is obviously joking or tee-rolling (or treading a fine line between the two).

Schmendrick is the name of a loser character in a Yiddish play, and it entered Yinglish (the old language of the Lower East Side more than today’s yeshivisher raid or Chassidish Aynglish-Lipa loshon) as yet another term for an incompetent jerk.

I have a friend and a former business associate whose names are the same, both beginning with a Sh. As my associate was, well, a schmendrick, I changed said associate’s first name to Schmendrick in my cell phone book so I would not inadvertently take his calls or pass up on my friend’s calls. (I still had to call him a couple of times to collect past due monies that he was holding before I changed my number and moved on.)

I also refer to a certain failed blogger as Schmendrick, even fooling people into believing that in Chernovitz, where my roots are, Schmendrick was the common nickname for Shmarya (vehamayvin yavin as to who I mean).

No one who has a smartphone is less than smart enough to refer to it as smart phone.

The Teeroller Chassidim are out in full force today. I guess they think there won’t be anywhere to troll tomorrow. Believing that is only a little less krum than what some Teerollers do profess to believe.

This is a perfect example of the clash between Torah views and secular attitudes. Avrohom, Moshe and Dovid said about themselves that they are Dust, Earth, Ash. I am not on such a madreiga to consider myself like that, but I feel I can be called a “loser, miserable and unfortunate”. That is a level that secular thinking cannot adopt.

Come join the bais medrash and shtyg a few days and you will start thinking with daas Torah.
