True story. A friend of mine was dating a girl who was a baalas teshuva. He decided to take her ice skating, since he had a bit of shaychus and wanted to show off. Then the girl started showing off and really put on a floor show (disclaimer- I'm not endorsing this behavior as fitting within the boundaries of tznius). Turns out the girl used to be a professional skater. Doh!

Guy shows up at gal's house, expecting to sit in, as was his usual custom. Knowing he'd sit in, he had walked over to the girl's house (apparently lived nearby). After the parents greet him and they sit and shmooze a little, the young lady enters the room. So the guy starts talking to her, fully intending to get to know her right there in her dining room.
Girl's father now realizes that the guy doesn't intend to take his daughter out and he knows his daughter will flip. He gently suggests to the guy that perhaps the conversation will be more comfortable if they go out, maybe to a lounge.
Samrt guy gets the point and realizes he needs to take the girl out. But he doesn't have his car with them. No prob, says Dad, I'll call a car service.
Uh, I didn't bring my wallet, dude answers, mortified.Girl's father had to give him money....

I'm turning red just at the thought of these stories happening to me...
asdfg- those are too funny!

This didn't happen to me but I know the person who it happened to and I assure you it's not a made up legend.
The guy is driving the girl in a car with a steering wheel on the wrong side (a British car) when the transmission blows and he can't do more that 25 M.P.H. Many drivers that pass feel the need to honk and make obscene gestures at the person they think is the driver.
The girl is about to lose it but the guy keeps reassuring her that they are honking because they think know her and they are exerting one finger to let her know that she is number 1.
Eventually she lost her cool and started screaming back and letting everyone know that she was not the driver...
For the record they did not get married. (Or go out again.)

This isn’t really a “shidduch” story, but…
Many years ago, when I was young and single, I was staying at out-of-town relatives over Shabbos. I did some erev-Shabbos shopping for them, but as it was getting quite late I had to head to the checkout line before the entire shopping list was checked off. Since I was pretty sure the supermarket was open 24/7, I planned on returning motzei Shabbos and finishing up.
When I reached the cashier, I asked her (just to make sure – better safe than sorry) “Are you open on Saturday night?”
You can probably guess what happened next.
“Well, sometimes I read a book or go to a movie…” she started answering me (this is paraphrasing – I don’t remember exactly what she started answering).
I was a little embarrassed for myself, but mortified for her. “No, no, no – I’m sorry – I mean is the STORE open on Saturday night” I explained.
After getting confirmation that yes, the store was open the following night, I apologized again and made my way out.P.S. – this was many years ago, and I don’t remember if I returned the next night to shop, but I didn’t repeat that question ever again where it might have been misconstrued.
Never.

I know someone that took his date to a park. They walked around for hours. When he was ready to take her home he noticed that the gate to the park was locked and they were locked in!! He told her, "i can climb over the gate, and then u try, if u have a hard time, i will help you." He climbed over, no problem. She was dead embarrassed in her straight skirt, but she did it.
P.S. they got married!! She was very impressed how he handled the situation!!

That park date story made me laugh out loud, because my daughter had her own park-date debacle. A blind date arranged by a friend of hers (the boy was a friend of the girl's husband), picked my daughter up and had no idea where to go, so he asked if she knew of a park. She really didn't but he remembered there was one about 20 minutes away, so he drove around until he found it. The parking situation was difficult, but he finally found a spot and they went into the park. First thing she noticed - all the people playing with dogs in the park. She is DEATHLY afraid, and the boy knew that before the date. Then they kind of wandered aropund aimlessly until it started to get dark and she felt uneasy, so she suggested they get ready to leave. He needed to use the restroom, so he left her standing out in a very deserted area by the facilities, in the dark. He finally came out (I just had a flashback to my own date experience that I posted here), and they left, but he could not remember where the car was. They wandered around, until they finally found it. He took ehr home, and needless to say, that was not an experience to be repeated.

I heard this from a lady that we were introduced to at the wedding of a friend. As far fetched as it sounds I do believe it but you can decide for yourself to believe it or not.
The date took place in downtown Baltimore by the Harbor. The girl realized right away that it wasn't going to happen but apparently her date did not.
They stopped at a street vendor and he bought her a big yellow helium balloon. Not wanting to offend him and not wanting to have to hold it the whole time, she tied it to her hand and thanked him (while praying that she wouldn't meet any friends).
While they were walking around and talking she felt him moving uncomfortably close to her and she moved over a few inches. After a couple more times that this happened she lost her balance and fell into the water (she said there were no gates there at the time).
Luckily there was a water taxi right there and she was rescued. For the rest of the date he was complimenting himself on how smart he was for buying her a yellow balloon so that if she fell into the water it would be easy to spot her.
They did not marry each other.

Dr. Pepper: i'm ROTFLOL right now, that's hilarious.$
Posted 6 years ago # -
Dr. Pepper, thank you for what has turned out to be the best laugh I have had all day. How very fortuitous that the young man thought to buy the young lady a yellow helium balloon, so when he caused her to almost drown, she would be easy to find.

Dr. Pepper: wow!!! hilarious!!!
this actually happened to my friend, dr. pepper's story reminded me of it:
my friend is told to call the girl a wednesday, he knows he has a wedding that night, but doesn't mention it to the shaddchin before & plans on calling her!!! so he's at terrace on the park & goes in the elevator to make the call!! he dials her number & a girl's phone in the elevator starts ringing!!! they realize, that they're in the elevator together and start laughing!!! they decide that since they already met why not find a spot to talk a bit, ends up they talk in the lobby!!!
every guy in the place[me included] see them talking & are like what is he thinking, or is he maybe getting engaged any day now!!! we got it out of him to tell us what was going on, that they were in the elevator together when he dialed he!!!no they did not get married!!!

asdfghjkl- that's hysterical!
Posted 6 years ago # -
ASDF thats great :-)
Actually, thats a reason I think we should have mixed tables for singles at weddings. Let them meet and converse and see if anything is worth pursuing. Kind of like speed dating without the pressure! I have had a few friends meet this way (but they were MO, so the mixed tables werent taboo).

Hey, the park story reminds me of my own park story! (I bet a lot of people have park stories...) On an earlier date with my husband, we went to a nice park / garden with lots of trees and flowers and pretty scenery, but unfortunately no nice (or even decent) bathrooms. Being that it was a hot day and we were drinking a lot, we stopped off at the bathrooms before going home. I managed to get myself locked into a really disgusting stall. The door opened inwards, so I couldn't push it open. I considered climbing over the top, but the only foothold was a very flimsy-looking toilet paper holder, and I didn't want to break my leg, so I had to crawl limbo-style under the (very low) stall door, in my nice sweater and skirt and blow-dried hair, on the filthy floor that looked like it had never, ever been washed...
I didn't tell my husband this until after we got married... and he burst out laughing and told me that he remembers wondering what took me so long!Posted 6 years ago # -
lol LAer you gota nice hubby!!!

This happened to my roomate and housemate. We were living in a two family house and both apartments were young, single girls. One night, two of them had dates - lets call them Chani and Rivki. The Rivki left with her date. The next guy showed up and him and Chani realized that this guy was supposed to go out with Rivki! They called up Rivki, who came back and swapped dates.
Chani and her proper date ended up getting married.

A similar story happened to two friends of mine when we were in yeshiva in Israel.
Both were Dovid and both had dates on the same night through the same shadchan.
I'll never understand why, but the shadchan set up both dates to meet at the same place in the same hotel. A few minutes in one Dovid realized he was dating the wrong person and went to find the other Dovid (and his date) so they could switch.
Another similar story- one shadchan thought she had a great idea for a guy I knew from yeshiva and wanted to speak it over with another shadchan before she suggested it. The second shadchan thought she was talking about another guy and decided to call him and suggest it before the first one did (since it was such a good idea). The second guy ended up getting engaged to her.

asdfghjkl- you must tell me how long ago or how recently (generally) this elevator story happened
