I was stuck behind a car at a light. He (or she or it) was either watching the news, posting it or deeply engrossed in either a sefer or applying make-up. Whatever the case I was stuck behind this car.. for a FULL round… AND I DIDN’T BEEP!!

So the question to you, dear friends of the CR is, am I required to get out the car and let said occupants know that deep down my s/n is really “UNTAMED LION”, “WILD BEAST”, and the only reason why I didn’t blast them off and away is because my horn doesn’t horn. Or do I let them think the person in the back of them is one of the nicest, gracious, most patient person since Hillel?

Depends where you live. Here in NYC, the cars behind you would have started beeping.

    #1262269

    Sorry about that.

In NYC, there are places where honking is illegal. So maybe you were only law-abiding.

You’ve taught me a very important lesson here. From now on, I’ll make sure to be mean to people so as not to fool them into thinking I’m a better person than I really am.

If they waited a “full round”, they are probably oblivious to that fact.

On the Q about it being Geneivas Da’as, it’s surely not. We are obligated to always behave. When we lose control, we are sinning. Similar to a person who makes a Neder to kill someone or to steal something, which are invalid from the beginning; so too, you are not violating anything by behaving.

Is it legal to drive a car with no working horn?

I doubt that he gave you any thought. As you write, he was engrossed in whatever. IMOHO you woud have been justified in honking. He was over on gezel zeman. If there were cars behind you also of them.

Sorry about that, I had thought it wouldn’t take long to put on my makeup. I’ll make sure not to do that again.

I know. It looks comical sometimes…

I get stuck behind someone not really intending to drive.. for the foreseeable future… I am forced to wait.. and wait.. (no.. I will not get out and share my mind with anyone!). That is until someone shows up in back of me… and starts honking. Χ‘Χ¨Χ•Χš מΧͺΧ™Χ¨ אבורים!!!

Is it legal to drive a car with no working horn?

    Not in New York

New York Vehicle and Traffic Law Β§ 375. Equipment
    1. (a) Every motor vehicle, operated or driven upon the public highways of the state, shall be provided with adequate brakes and steering mechanism in good working order and sufficient to control such vehicle at all times when the same is in use, and a suitable and adequate horn or other device for signaling, which horn or device shall produce a sound sufficiently loud to serve as a danger warning but shall not be used other than as a reasonable warning nor be unnecessarily loud or harsh.

It is interesting to note that horns are addressed in paragraph 1 but turn signals aren’t discussed until paragraph 18

Oh cool, we can comment on specific post now!

This should make threads more comprehensible now!

    #1263852

How can you tell if a reply was to a specific post?

    #1263856

It was a sefer about putting on makeup on Shabbos.

    #1263854

    Oh.

Exactly! (your post is still awaiting moderation so I don’t know what you wrote, but I see what you did.)

    #1263869

A reply to an earlier post gets put after that post, so it can get lost.

    #1263878

True. Everyone should hit the “notify” button every time they post, so that won’t be an issue.

Or maybe, that entire thread-within-a-thread will be posted more recently.
    Let’s experiment and see.

It’s so interesting – do you see the difference between the way my posts show up when I hit reply to your post vs. when I hit reply to my response to your post?

We can make a whole design this way!

    #1263997

    Way too indented…

    #1264008

    Bad idea.

    #1264012

    It’s just indented differently, no?

    #1264014

I actually like the idea of being able to reply to a specific post, just not the way it’s been implemented.

    #1264022

The posts should show up in order posted, just there should be a way to see which post it was responding to – maybe a link, or quoting that post.

    #1264032

People do that now. And some people don’t because when you call them on the inaccuracy of their response they want to be able to say they were answering a different post.

Whether this will help organize threads or just tangle them remains to be seen.

Sometimes it’s not necessary because it’s obvious that you were responding to the previous post. But then if someone wants to find an excuse to insult you, they can pretend that you were responding to a different post and take your post out of context, so you have to take the time to explain why makes no sense and why it’s obvious that you were responding to the post that you were responding to.

This way no one can do that anymore.

And by the way if the “misunderstanding” really was not deliberate, an apology would be in order. And if you still don’t understand what I wrote, you can ask Meno to explain it to you.

You should know that I was trying to be “dan l’kaf zchus” that you really were confused which is why I took the time to explain it to you. But if that’s the case, you would have apologized. And based on this post, I am finding it harder to believe..

    #1264504

I don’t have a clue what you are talking about! Do you honestly think that every post somehow relates to you or something you said? Do you have a running list of things you believe people owe you apologies for? I think it would be worthwhile to take this place a lot less seriously. Our jobs in this world are to give apologies, not collect them.

…you can ask Meno to explain it to you…

I honestly haven’t a clue what’s going on here, but I would prefer to be left out of it.

    Thanks

“I don’t have a clue what you are talking about!”
If I misunderstood your comment, I apologize.

“Do you honestly think that every post somehow relates to you or something you said?”
No, this is the first time I recall having done that. (aside from the comment to Yekke which was a joke). And that’s only because it really did sound like it. But again, if I was mistaken, I apologize.

“Do you have a running list of things you believe people owe you apologies for? I think it would be worthwhile to take this place a lot less seriously. Our jobs in this world are to give apologies, not collect them.”
I made it clear why I made that comment. But again, if it was based on a misunderstanding (on my part), I apologize.

Maybe what DY meant was that the system should do it automatically when you hit reply to a particular post.

    #1264905
    Lilmod Ulelamaid

What they should do is put something in the system that lets you know how many posts in each thread have not yet been read by you.

Then you can figure out if there’s an earlier post you should read.

    #1264915
    Lilmod Ulelamaid

Even better, it should show up in a different color until you’ve read it.

    #1264922

Yes, I meant that hitting “reply” to a specific post would quote that post. It would be much less tedious than copy/pasting.

    #1264931
    Lilmod Ulelamaid
    Participant

hadn’t realized at first that that’s what you meant.
    Yes, it would be.

Also, sometimes I’m hesitant to copy/paste because it makes the post too long and/or too messy, but if it was set up automatically, it could be done in a way that avoids that issue to some extent, since the quoted part would probably look very different from the rest of the post.
