I know someone who knows some cops and therefor he has several PBA cards. But how unethical is it that if we both get pulled over for the same thing, he has more of a chance of getting let off than me who has no police connections? How is this allowed in America where it is grossly unfair that you can get off based on connections even if one is commiting an offense? I find this to be quite disturbing….

You dont “get out of tickets” from having a PBA card.

the Cops know people who have that dont get a ticket

And its not Chilul Hashem to try to fight a ticket. There are plenty of legitimate ways to beat tickets , perfectly legal

I’ve had PBA and DEA cards for years. Unless there’s an officers name and number on the back they are only helpful for minor infractions. Displayed on the windshield they may help with minor parking offenses. It’s not a “get out of jail free” card.

Anyone who would like a PBA card, can buy one on eBay. (They are not a government document and it is not issued to any party, and is entirely legal.)

I have a very rare mint condition card commemorating the 1000th post in General Shmooze. It has a picture of Joseph on the front and squeak on the back. I am putting it up on ebay for a starting bid of $42,000,000,000.

If you get pulled over the officer normally asks what the officers name is, how you know him, and were he is a cop. Just to make sure you didn’t just get a card and that you are actually friendly with the officer.

The officer who originally gave the card has his name and badge number on the card. So you just look at the name before you show it to the cop who pulled you over.

Derech-yea but you have to know it before the cop pulls you over.

I’ve been pulled over and showed the cop my sherrifs “PBA” card, which I got because they sent me a letter saying, “send us twenty bucks and we’ll send u a card (I sent them 20 bucks once and get a updated card every year for a few years now) and he said,” alright, I won’t give u a ticket, just slow down”

So it does work people, and it isn’t signed at all however it does come with my name actually printed (like by a computer) on it and looks pretty official. However sometimes I’ve gotton tickets even though I showed it so, its can help.

I have one of these. Never used it though. Not because I never pulled over but because I just forgot about it.

Also, cops are intimidating. I’m just supposed to give a big smile and say “Oh, you can’t give me a ticket! I have this!”?

Cindereall- what u do is when they as for ur license and reg. You give them those two plus the PBA card on top of the license. You don’t say anything about it.

This is not only unethical but if some enterprising ADA gets wind of it you might wind up in a heap of trouble. There is a criminal case being heard now in Bronx County Supreme Court involving police officers and PBA officials.

It seems that YWN is defiantly not posting the story about the people in Ohio who found $3 million worth of baseball cards in their aunt’s attic. I’m sure there were some PBA cards as well as a special edition OneOfMany snort card with rainbow colored hair.

cinderella- when they ask you for your license and registration, you slip the pba or sba card and ya say “seargent so and so says i should give you this” and it all works from there:)

Think first -“I’ve been pulled over and showed the cop my sherrifs “PBA” card, which I got because they sent me a letter saying, “send us twenty bucks and we’ll send u a card (I sent them 20 bucks once and get a updated card every year for a few years now) and he said,” alright, I won’t give u a ticket, just slow down”

This has nothing to do with the PBA card. Some cops are just nice. If you’d apologize and act innocent they wouldn’t give you a ticket either. I’ve been pulled over many times and I hardly ever got a ticket.

I’ve been in locker rooms with cops and this is one of the topics they talk about. One cop said -“I take the PBA card and rip it up and shove it somewhere (I’ll leave out his exact word) and then give him a ticket.

So a PBA card means nothing to most cops. And if they haven’t done their quota -you definitely are getting a ticket.

What does work is saying when he approaches the car and says “Do you know you were doing 75 in a 55 mile zone?” You answer -“No, I didn’t. I’m so sorry. I never speed -I just didn’t realize how fast I was going. I haven’t got a ticket in umpteen years. (however years was the last one) Or say “I’ve only gotten one ticket in 20 years of driving.” Then add -“I’m always a very careful driver”. Just don’t lie about when the last time you got a ticket. This is more likely to get you a “warning” than any PBA card.

I have a very close relative who’s a high ranking police officer. Most cops will in fact give you a break if you’re honestly apologetic and polite, with or without the card. If u have an attitude, the card won’t help. Here’s some good advice: don’t break the law and you won’t have to worry about any of this.

NYC cops rarely will let someone off without a ticket, once stopped.

I have a (not frum) cousin who used to be a high ranking cop in NYC. He once gave me one of his rank pins and said I should show it if I was ever pulled over. (He apparently got extras to give out to friends and family.)

After he handed it to me, he paused, and said,”But you’re wearing a yarmulke, so they’ll probably give you a ticket anyway.”

I went on to ask him if he had ever experienced antisemitism in his years on the force.

He replied, “Not to my face.”

(He’s well over six feet tall, and had served in the Marines prior to the NYPD…)

Changing slightly to a very related topic, I have been very anxious to discuss but never had the right opportunity. This bumped thread is perfect.

I have seen a few cars (mainly in Kensington, but that was just because I worked there and that’s where I was during the daytime,) displaying a book on their dashboard with the symbol of the NYPD. The book 100% saved them from getting parking tickets. So much so, that they took advantage of it by parking on the wrong side by alternate-side parking, and parking all day in metered spots without ever buying a single muni-meter receipt. I don’t know if it would also allow them to commit worse crimes, like parking at a hydrant, no standing, or bus-stop.

As far as I can tell, these soft-covered books are training manuals for the traffic cops, who are not really Police Officers. (Unlike policemen that go through Police Academy for a long time, the Traffic Cops are civilians that just take a short course and immediately are authorized to issue tickets. Although they drive cars that look like police cars, and wear similar uniforms, they are what used to be called “Brownies” and basically just there to give parking tickets and nothing else.)

I don’t know how to get these books, but it looks like a simple thing to fake. It is just a plain white paper book, 8-1/2 X 11, with the symbol of the NYPD and a title. I have seen the symbol in both color and black-and-white, on both spiral-bound and glued books.

I pictures of some them, though I don’t know where they are right now. One of the drivers once came out of a store and saw me looking at his book (through the windshield, without touching his car) while he was parked illegally, and got really angry at me. With that attitude, I figure he must be related to a cop, if not one himself!

I would get angry, too. Why are you looking at people’s private things?

Placing something on your dashboard, especially with the intention for it to be seen when parking in public, is hardly a private thing.

    Thanks Joseph – exactly.

Plus, the driver surely knew that he was audaciously parking illegaly, and that I was suspiciously examining at the method he used. He was likely just afraid of getting busted so he acted self-rightously angry.

I also have the right to be angry at these guys that prevent the street from being cleaned, or occupy parking spots for more than the legal time limit of one hour or whatever.

I didn’t realize people who put things on their dashboards intend for all pedestrians to stop and stare at it through the window.

    #1117920

Someone wearing a rowdy t-shirt or hanging a picture on their window might also not have intended for people to stop and stare at it but better be able to accept when people do stop and look at it. If someone expects or hopes anyone will look at something he’s publicly displaying, such as paraphernalia on his dashboard, he should be prepared if everyone takes a look.
