Ah that’s why I didn’t know the answer.

But anyway, I was referring to Chaver in the context of “Ya’amod heChaver Ploni ben Ploni…”

Interesting. I’m pretty sure I’ve heard people called up as “heChaver Rav Ploni….”

My grandfather gets called up to the Torah as “Hachaver ***** ben Hechaver ****”.

I have tried to work out the criterion for this kibbud, but to no avail.

The title is used in Yekkeshe kehillos. It is given to someone who has served the community, often to mark a special birthday (60, 65…). In Breuer’s, the chover’s wife must cover her hair. Breuers also gives “Chover Tittel” (as it’s called) to a young man who has learned for a few years after marriage (I believe 2) and (once again) if his wife covers her hair.
My father-in-law z”l was a Chover. My husband told my children it’s part of their Kibbud Av vaEm towards their grandfather to use the title when making a mi shebeirach for my husband.

Is there some kind of ordainment ceremony?

Not every wife of a Chover in Breuers kehiloh had their hair covered. Will not name names.

In reply to Meno, I’m sure there is an ordainment ceremony but don’t know what it involves. There is a very long nusach in a certificate that is awarded. I suppose שרשי מנהג אשכנז duscusses it.

Littleeema is correct. The title is an award for outstanding service to the kehilla. This would be appropriate in the cases of Yekke2’s grandfather and great grandfather.
There was a gentleman in Manchester who was awarded the title of Chover a few years ago. It was a surprise to him as part of a hachnosas sefer torah that he was part of. He later said it was the best moment of his life. This is a flavour of how significant the title is to a “Yotzei Ashkenaz” (yekke).

That’s interesting. I am pretty sure there are those in the GGBH who have the title without any noticeable contribution to the community or society. (Although I could be ignorant of their history)

B’H I don’t have to worry about qualifications for “Chover”, because B’H I merited to earn myself a Semicho, so someone with Semicha, this surpasses title of Chover which becomes a moot point to my situation.

What’s to stop any old yodel from self-entitling himself Chover?

YU has had a Chaver program since 5739. “The Chaver Program is a kollel for men entering or completing professional studies other than the rabbinate. Study programs in Gemarah, Halakha and ethics have been established for students who delay their entrance to graduate schools of medicine, law, psychology and business. Participants pursue a post-college year of intense study of Talmud and Halacha related to their professional goal while attending regular RIETS shiurim.” (from the YU website). I think that they also have to write and defend a thesis.

In Israel, Eretz Hemdah has revived the higher title Morenu. Baalei battim learn through source sheets and shiurim and take exams.

147, not necessarily. In Hungary the title was awarded for outstanding scholarship. In ‘Guardian of Jerusalem’ it says that Rav Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld’ was awarded the title of Chover at his aufruf. He was called up as Hachoson Hachover Harav Chaim ben … (as far as I remember. If anyone has the book to hand I would be happy to be corrected)

Joseph, the same as what stops any yodel entitling themselves Dr, Professor, Duke, Prince, etc etc. I.e. nothing but self respect.

Avi K has reminded me that I was wrong in my previous post. Rav YC Sonnenfeld was awarded the title Morenu at his aufruf. I need to look in the book again.

In “Breuers” there are generally three ways to get the title “chaver”. Either by becoming 60 years old, or by being awarded chosson beraishis, or when getting married if your wife will cover her hair and you will stay learning for one year after marriage and the rov of the kehilla is mesader kidushin, then you will be called hachaver under the chuppa.

In the gemora’s time Rabbi Eloazor was a Talmid Chover to Rabbi Yochanan.

The Chasam Sofer did not call his talmid the Maharam Ash (Imrei Aish) talmidi because he considered him to be a Talmid Chover. The Imrei Aish called the Chasam Sofer a רב ששכח תלמידו.
