Not everyone who uses it smokes it. And people who are stupid enough to drive while high or drunk are possibly the same set of people who use substances despite their illegality.

I just checked a Google search. Try “cancer risk from cannabis”.

Smoking tobacco vs. smoking pot – carcinogens

I cannot cite specific references, and I’m not in the research mood today. But I do recall hearing a lecture in college, provided with the actual scientific article that compared these two with specific regards to cancer risk. The carcinogen risk ration between cannabis:tobacco was approximately 400:1. I guess this suggests that a single joint was about 400 times the cancer risk of a single cigarette. If we are going to calculate that an average smoker is consuming a pack a day, which is 20 cigarettes, then the risk factor for weed is still 20:1. That is not small time danger. And with the halachos about the obligation to refrain from danger, this qualifies for an issur. And furthermore, this issur does not need to be a psak halacha from a posek, any different than one needs to ask a shailoh if it is permissible to eat a ham sandwich. As for the sandwich, once one knows it is chazzer, the issur is open in the Torah. Same here.

“And people who are stupid enough to drive while high or drunk are possibly the same set of people who use substances despite their illegality.”

Ahh yes, another area of overlap between this and the gun debate: “people will break the law anyway, so we might as well just have no law.” Clearly there are more drunk drivers than high drivers; nobody denies that. I think pretty simple logic suggests that that’s because alcohol is legal and available in bars. The illegality of pot forces users to use it privately. If it were legal and there were pot-bars, there would obviously be more DUI incidents with it.

If you all admit that tobacco and alcohol are bad, why are you advocating for introducing a third, bad thing into the mix? Is it just that you think if people are going to harm their health and that of others, they deserve to have more options of how to do it? Or, is it the more likely reality that you have all gotten so used to arguing the liberal side of every point that you’re virtually incapable of having a real, personal opinion that is in line with your own beliefs instead of those of the greater leftist cause?

Not the same thing. There are still possibly a large number of law-abiding citizens who don’t use it simply because it is illegal. But it takes a special kind of stupid to drive while under the effects of a substance that makes you an incapable driver.

Marijuana doesn’t impair judgment in the way alcohol does
(causing users to drive despite their impaired ability), does it?

You asked: “Marijuana doesn’t impair judgment in the way alcohol does
(causing users to drive despite their impaired ability), does it?”

Yes it does. Because it is usually not as sedating, the user has the illusion of the greater sense of control. In fact, and research shows this, is impairs reaction time, and it affects perception in a potentially destructive way.

But they know they can’t drive while high, right?
