After a while my wicks sometimes mushroom on top so the flame is adversely affected. Any ideas on how to make the wick so it doesn’t break up after a while? I’m sure others have this issue so I’m wondering if anyone has any suggestions. It’s good to have beautiful mitzvos.
My wicks don’t do that, maybe you should just look around for a different type of wick. There are plenty of types out there, floating,plastic,wooden, oil drawing wicks etc…..
Sure, make it smaller (lower), don’t leave out too much on top.
Do you either make your own wicks or use loosely twisted cotton ones? I think it just needs to be a little tight and not too long on top.

I can’t say that I have noticed this problem in my limited experience…have you tried different brands? I am partial to beeswax candles myself — to me, it seems as if the flame burns more cleanly. This may well not be related to what you are experiencing though. Could it be that perhaps the wicks you have are too long?

Most people here use oil which is a bigger pain to use. I almost never get it right. The candles are much easier to use.
I almost always have an issue with the wicks with the oil

The pre-measured oil cups are not a pain.

It’s probably the wind. You should light inside.
I dont use the pre-measured cups. They are overpriced. Its much cheaper to pour oil and used the wicks and floaters
I use “plumbers lamp wick” in those brass tubes with extra virgin olive oil bought at a grocery. Beautiful flame every time.
You can get the wicks in most hardware stores. It comes in a spool that can last for several years.

What were the original wicks made from? A reed maybe?
