hold your hand in front of you palm facing you
notice how the fingers are (of course) different lengths.
now close your fingers towards you until they touch your palm but you can still see your fingernails, dont bend your palm.
notice how they all line up to be the same length
this is in preparation for making a fist, so that all the fingers are well and equally supported by the palm, so that when you strike something there is much less of a chance of damaging your fingers!

"so that when you strike something there is much less of a chance of damaging your fingers"
if you're striking something, don't you deserve a little damage to your fingers?

not if someone is trying to damage or kill you.

ummm whats the big deal? its because it is longer until the uh knuckle i guess (im not sure what the thing is called). u can find something in everything if u really wanted to
not trying to sound lke a downer or anything but honestly why is it a big deal? and y is there less chance of damagin ur fingers just bec they r the same lentgh?

hey i was thinking the same thing. if your hand was opened and you were saying that i'd understand. like when you jam a finger. but if you're closing your fingers in it shouldn't make a difference. what's the difference with your fingers if you're punching with your knuckles?

martial arts doesn't use fists. they use the side of your hand.

teen, moish
if your fingers are not well supported by the palm forming a unified solid mass they can easily be bent forcefully by the blow resulting in a strain or fracture. it is not only the knuckles involved in producing a blow, the next joint up can also be involved."y is there less chance of damagin ur fingers just bec they r the same lentgh? "
because otherwise only the longest finger would be supported by the palm.kapusta: maybe you are evolving into a pacifist?

moish, I've been doing various martial arts for a very long time. The edge of the hand is only one blow, and it's really not that common. The body has many natural weapons. Among the best are the knee, the elbow, the shin and the forehead. Hitting someone in the skull with your ungloved, unwrapped, untaped fist is a good way to break the delicate bones of the hand. There's even a condition called "boxer's fracture".
Self defense is a whole separate world far, far removed from the yeshiva...

I heard a vort on this once....
When a person keeps their hands closed, (meaning refrains from giving tzedakah, chesed, etc.) it's hard for them to see the individual needs of each person (i.e all the fingers the same length),,,but when he opens his hand, (opens his heart to giving) each finger is a different lenghth then he is able to see each person in need and what type of chesed is required for that individual person.Posted 4 years ago # -
kiruvwife: wow that was really a nice vort!!! thanx!!!

heres a nice thing i heard
when a baby is born its fingers are always clenched in a fist to show that it only cares about itself but whena person dies thier hands are open to show that they have come to the point where they care about othersthats not it exactly but its the gist of it
