a better translation, but it is gegeiben, not geiben. it’s also “far MIR yiddalach alein ”

You’re right about “gegeiben,” but the first chorus is slightly
different from the later ones – it doesn’t have “mir,” and it
starts with “Ubber” instead of “Oy, vee.”

I would say that your translation is literal too; for the latter translation would work only if the phrase was “heet em” not “heet er”.

That is correct. As Mammele pointed out in another thread,
my Yiddish grammar could use some work. As Ujew points out,
though, there is nothing non-literal about the correct translation
(“literal” does not mean that the meaning is given in the same order).
