Why are you repeating yourself? Should we repeat the rebuttals?

I’ll add that you’re contradicting yourself in the very same post when you write, “My point is not to argue assur/ mutar” and then quote poskim who asser.

“By wearing such a sheitel the wearer ensnares those who see her in very serious issurim”

This is hyperbole, at its best.

    <“Most people aren’t interested in being “different”.>

DY – Your point is a good one insofar as it pertaining to individuals reverting to their original minhag. But if the kehila itself issued a takana after the gezeira was over that everyone should revert to the kehilos original minhag, then your objection would be alleviated.

    Slonim,

Zalzvaser has made a very legit point, generally speaking; this is exactly how MANY minhagim developed i.e. via circumstances. The way they dressed in Spain and they way they dressed in Morroco and later in other countries constantly changed, if you look into history.

Somehow, Chassidim and Charedim decided to put the “clock” on a hold. Some put the hold to 1920’s (Chabad hats), 1940’s (Yeshivish hats) some at 1800’s, some 1700’s (Chassidim wearing white socks and knickers) etc.

The point of going in a certain dress code is to differentiate ourselves, so everyone picked a diff level in the course of time, as the Goyish world changed we stayed with the old one – Its all relative. As for the change in Kisui Rosh, that is another topic…soon.

    Zaltz,
In regards to the Czarist gezeros, Rav Shlomo Kluger who lived in the very times discussed, is quiet clear:

From “Adorned with Dignity” by C.T. Friedman:

“Harav Binyamin Rabinovitz attested to the reason for the outbreak of sheitels (see his approbation for the sefer Da’as Moshe v’Yisroel):
The custom of wearing sheitels in public started approximately 150 years ago because of the decree of the Czar … Even after the decree was abolished, this custom remained and continued to be practiced in later generations until the cause for this custom has become completely forgotten.

The decree of the Czar effected a transformation in the manner in which women in all generations observed the beloved mitzvah of covering the hair. Before the gezeirah, only a minority of nonreligious woman wore sheitels as a head-covering instead of the age-old traditional kerchief worn by all women. Yet, as a result of the decree, many women slowly began wearing only a sheitel as a head-covering (without covering it with a kerchief). Even after the decree was no longer active, women continued wearing wigs in public since they became accustomed to the look. Additionally, even those women who didn’t live under the Czar’s jurisdiction began to wear wigs instead of kerchiefs since they rationalized, “If so and so, who is an upright rebbetzin, or whose husband is rav, wears a sheitel, surely it is okay for me to wear one.”

The Satmar Rebbe zt”l attested to this about one hundred years ago: “At this time, even the righteous women have taken the liberty of wearing sheitels. Indeed, Hagaon HaBa’al Machne Levi, the dayan of Frankfurt, spoke against this practice, even though in his times there was only a minority who wore sheitels…”

It continues: (from Adorned with Dignity)

    Opposition to the Sheitel
At that time, when women from other countries began to wear sheitels, rabbanim opposed this practice and stated that it was a deviation from mesorah:
The Maharatz Chiyus declared, “It was accepted throughout the generations that all women were careful not to wear a wig in public. Even in my youth, I never heard of a woman living in our country who wore a sheitel; it just became a new breakage of the boundaries of mesorah.”

    The Reform Movement
When the influence of the reform movement seeped into Germany and the surrounding countries, many women unfortunately began to uncover their hair. Thus, rabbanim ruled that women may wear wigs (as opposed to revealing their own hair). Additionally, in the early 1900’s in America most Jewish women did not cover their hair. This may be the reason why Rabbanim in America allowed the wearing of wigs.

    The Era after the Holocaust
In the aftermath of the Holocaust, the generation was shattered physically, emotionally, and spiritually. (The Satmar Rebbe zt”l said that any person who survived the war and remained frum was on the level of a tzaddik and could evoke yeshuos for others.) Thus, due to the weakness of the girls, many were not ready to cover their hair at all after they got married. For this reason, even great rabbanim who were against the wearing of wigs allowed them to wear sheitels in order to save them from exposing their actual hair in public.

    Dancing,

You keep on repeating yourself, well, I will quote some new sources clearly stating like the SHT”G that the heter is in Reshus haRabim and NATURAL hair.

Note – I hope you realize, you don’t pasken from books and so-called Kol Koras.

The words of our holy poskim are there for all to see, and therein is where the source of psak has and will always come forth

Here are the words of the Rema (CH 303) clearly stating the heter of Pe’ah Nuchris in Reshus haRabim and NATURAL looking hair:

Herein are the words of the Pri Megadim Ch 71 clearly stating in Reshus haRabim and NATURAL looking hair:

All the above have clearly sated that the issue in concern was Natural Hair and Reshus haRabim!

I know I’m coming into this late in the game…

The Sefer HaChinuch writes that, while according to Halacha Kiddushin can be performed with any marginally valuable item, the custom is to utilize a ring. The reason he gives is that it serves as a “constant reminder” to her status.

Joseph- a ring is far less obvious to others than a large necklace; obviously the reminder is intended for the woman herself. I’m pretty sure a woman is constantly aware that she is wearing a wig especially as they aren’t known to be particularly comfortable.

Is there any prettiness lacking in nice hats and fancy tichels?

So even according to R’ Ovadia Yosef a woman may look pretty. I think it’s obvious when a women is a tzanua and when a woman isn’t; and it isn’t related to what type of covering is on her head. An immodest woman can be wearing a black headscarf and she’ll still give off the wrong impression.

    You’re right- case closed

Anyone who could state that the wigs today are fine because the shiltei Giborim and the Rema allowed wigs that looked like natural hair (which was a big debate and too complicated to argue about on Yeshiva world properly) hundreds of years ago or even fifty years ago has blinders on- you obviously all know much better than our most recent gedolei hador who proclaimed most of todays wigs immodest and erva

This debate is futile- the men here obviously want to justify their wives wigs – which look nothing like the wigs from fifty years ago and definitely not like the wigs from 200 years ago. This whole argument is ridiculous, but I’m not writing these responses for the men on this thread, i’m writing it for the women who might be reading this who are open to the emes. And I posted enough sourced info to show how this mitzvah is all about modesty.

You could continue justifying all the wigs by stating how the Rema and the Shiltei Giborim gave a heter to todays sheitels but anyone with a thinking brain realizes that they are two totally different items. One was used to cover the hair as an obvious head covering and one is used to accentuate, attract and provoke.
You’re all missing the big picture here which is so obvious that even a young child gets this (how many times has my little son said to me, Oh she’s covering her hair? Who would ever know that!) What a total deception and chillul Hashem.
And anyone who thinks that a woman’s modesty isnt connected to what’s on her head doesn’t understand modesty at all.
How ironic is it that on top of this whole thread is an ad for a wig company with the slogan “The best wigs go unnoticed”
    I think I’m dancing out of here….

How dare you say that about some of the biggest poskim, who, as shown above, held that the Shiltei Giborim does indeed apply to real looking wigs.

As far as the ad, that’s generated by keywords.

“And anyone who thinks that a woman’s modesty isnt connected to what’s on her head doesn’t understand modesty at all.”

Agreed – and “modesty” is defined by Halacha – not by books, professors and who knows who and what else.

i.e. and as long as the wig is in a modest form (let that be clear – NOT peritzus ) – even if it is created out of ones VERY OWN hair is 100% muttar once the minhag has been established.

Are there levels in Tznius ? – Yes!
Can you go Lefnim Meshuras haDin ? That is up to each individual separately with the guidance of their Rav.

We have no issue with you or anyone else accepting upon yourselves hidurim and chumros and, I respect you for that – but don’t impose it on others. Especially, when it’s based on misinformation or misquotes, which is not your fault at all, as how should you know? You never truly studied Gemara Rishonim and Poskim etc. rather – I blame those books. You read a book or two representing that side of the argument and you became all passionate about it – nothing wrong! Kol Hakavod, being passionate about a mitzvah is a great thing. But don’t expect everyone to agree or share your visions and beliefs, especially if it goes against their poskim.

If you are really interested in the truth – you should represent all the above and other quotes to your “respected Talmud Chacham”, as you probably didn’t comprehend the significance of the sources presented above, and how it goes against the book “sources” quoted.

I will quote more of how some of the sources were misrepresented or taken out of context in the following posts.

You quoted a בעל “תרומת הדשן” סימן י as if the Trumas Hadeshen is implying that whenever there is Pritzus its still גלוי הראש”

Here are the words in full, I don’t think this was his intent, let anyone that see say pshat:

I don’t feel I heard a good reasoning why a kehila shouldn’t return to a minhag that was coercively banished by a government gezeira once the gezeira is abolished. But be that as it may, I’ll put that question aside for the moment.

Am I correctly understanding from the sources offered here that the Mechaber opposed sheitels but the Rema permitted them? Thus they’re okay for Ashkenazic kehilos that accept them but not for Sephardim? And that the sources cited in this thread permitting are from the Ashkenazic world.

One point I’m unclear about is that it was mentioned here that the Gemorah permitted sheitels. If that is so, why was there the subsequent strong debates for many centuries among the latter poskim pro and con regarding peah nochris, if the Gemorah already paskened this matter.

The reason why married women cover their hair is because after marriage their hair is considered Erva. Erva is the areas of the body which Halacha says we must cover.
When a woman covers her hair with a shaitle that looks like her own hair, yes, she is technically covering this Erva, BUT, it is exactly the same if a woman covers other parts of her body which are considered Erva with skin colored, tight clothing and a photograph of exactly what is underneath. Yes, she is technically covered…but you can’t really tell.
Rabbanim are allowing it (the shaitle) because they feel they don’t have a choice…they feel that its better that its covered than not covered at all. (ask your local Rabbi…I have asked a few very choshuv poskim and this is what they told me)
What’s really sad is that this is not discussed. The shaitle has become the monopoly of hair covering and the more natural and more beautiful the better. Women and Men don’t realize how ludicrous the mitzvah of hair covering has become because no one is thinking of it in these terms – meaning that the hair of a married woman is Erva.
Many women want to cover their hair in a tznius fashion – but a tznius shaitle is looked down upon by many and very hard to find (you gotta look gorgeous so your husband is proud of you!) and a tichel or a hat is unaccepted (you look Israeli, chassidish, modern, etc)
So it continues…..The only way to change this is education and sensitizing everyone to the idea that hair in a married woman is Erva.

“Do you know why the Halacha is that women must cover their hair?”

I will quote one of the previously great Gadolim who lived 250 years ago – The Rav of Mitz and was a Talmid muvhak of the Shages Aryeh (who was also previously Rav of Mitz):

    http://hebrewbooks.org/pdfpager.aspx?req=10108&st=&pgnum=392

As you cans see he clearly states that there is NO specific reason why it’s considered an Erveh:

Thanks for the link – its a fascinating Teshuva!

See the end of the Teshva wherein he quotes a Psak he himself heard from Rav Moshe:
Wearing a Pe’ah is better off than a Matpachos (you hear Joseph?!)

For those that say so, what’s their halachic logic that a sheitel is “better” than a tichel? I don’t understand what reason anyone would say so, so I’d like to hear the rationale.

Also, see my last post above.

This is the paragraph GAON is referring to:

Slominer, the answer to your question is that Rav Moshe Feinstein (and Rav Abadi’s experience concurs) says that the hair is more likely to remain covered properly with a shaitel than with a tichel.

The above is exactly the words of one of the most prestigious Sphardi Poskim over 50 yrs ago:

Chacham Rav Ovadia quotes the above as well and argues on his reasoning, but as quoted above, its in sync with one the great previous Achronim.

I believe, had he seen his words he would have considered it..

Okay, going with your example. What is wrong with wearing skin colored clothing? I can think of two issues- 1) it’s provocative 2) maras ayin. Regarding issue #1 if a wig is refined it’s not a problem. Regardng issue #2 as established earlier in this thread, in a place where sheitels are commonplace maras ayin doesn’t apply. And btw- the only time I have ever been unsure whether or not a woman was wearing a sheitel was when she wore it further back blending it in with her own hair. The skin colored part doesn’t fool anyone (unless they’re not used to it)

“Am I correctly understanding from the sources offered here that the Mechaber opposed sheitels but the Rema permitted them? ”

There is NO Mechaber opposing, in fact the Rosh Hamatirim is a Sephardi i.e. the Shiltie Giborim…

And as I quoted there are many Sphardi gedolim that do not agree with the Yabia Omer – see the above Teshuva of the Yaskil Avdi and the Kaf Hachaim as well in CH 71

DY, correct me if I’m mistaken, but that point would only seemingly be applicable in specific or certain circumstances where women are wearing a snood incorrectly and aren’t careful with it to ensure full coverage at all times. But in areas or communities where the women insure they wear a tichel correctly and appropriately (as is the case in very many comminutes that are makpid to use tichels), that point wouldn’t be applicable.

Here’s 90% of this thread in a nutshell:

Side A: Shaitels are assur because there are so many poskim who say they’re assur, and it makes no logical sense that they should be muttar, because they look exactly like real hair, and therefore anyone that wears a shaitel is transgressing a terrible issur.

Side B: Granted there are many poskim who say shaitels are assur, and it might not seem to make sense, but there are also many reliable poskim who say shaitels are muttar, and apparently hold that the fact that shaitels look like real hair is not an issue, and therefore the people who wear shaitels are doing something which is completely acceptable.

(I disregarded the first part of the thread which discusses avodah zarah because that’s a completely different issue)

    Gam,
“Okay, going with your example. What is wrong with wearing skin colored clothing? I can think of two issues- 1) it’s provocative 2) maras ayin.”

Another difference is skin is a definite Ervah and provocative, which is why its applicable even to girls. Hair is not exactly that only when intact. If hair would be that much provocative girls would be considered an Ervah for girls as well.
Note: some poskim are even mattir to say Kriyas Shma in presence of uncovered hair where going with uncovered hair is the norm – but never any other body parts… (see Aruch hashulchan Ch 71, Shvilel L’David Ch 3)

Speaking for myself…I dispute the very fact that there are MANY poskim who hold its assur, as I have posted above. Almost all poskim accounted for, wrote their opposition in a total diff situation than today, i.e. in times where either Pe’ah Nuchris / wigs were just in the beginning stage or totally not worn. Hence, having an issue with Maris Eyen or Pritzus, whereas, as of today almost all Charedi women don a Peah nuchris.

This not my position – it is the position of the Pri Megadim, the שואל ומשיב in Magen Giborim, Rav Shlomo Kluger (who actually opposed P”N – refer to above quotes) and others, including the psak of the Mishnah Brurah (Ch. 71).

They clearly state that the problem of Maris Eyin is ONLY applicable wherein the minhag and fact is that no or only a few women wear any Pe’ah Nuchris.

In regards to what was publicized in the name of Rav SZ Aurbach and Rav Elyashiv ZTL as if he was against P’N

Here is what I found in the name of the family, disputing and bemoaning the above false rumor as if thier own daughters went against the parents will, being that they themselves wore wigs, with the blessings of thier parents (note, Rav Elyashivs daughter was RSZ DIL ) . They were initially against Pritzus wigs – not any other ones.

    He continues:

Harav Yosef Shalom Elyashivzt”l believed that it was more praiseworthy for a woman to cover her hair with a kerchief than with a wig. In his words, “Since the wearing of a wig is questionable according to halacha, it is definitely preferable to wear a kerchief since this is a matter of halacha.”

I was not going to respond to any of the comments posted after my last post but this has become a totally one sided conversation with many falsehoods being promoted.
Gaon- contrary to what you posted, I learned about this mitzvah under the guidance of very learned and chashuv Rabbanim and Rebbetzins who were quite well informed on the topic.
One Rebbetzin who I learned with actually spoke directly to Rav Elyashiv many times about the situation of todays sheitels – Rav Elyashiv was extremely concerned about the pritzus of most of todays wigs and he urged this Rebbetzin to write a book about the topic- which she did. This book has Rav Elyashiv’s approbation among many others (Rav Elyashiv’s Rebbetzin only wore a tichel with no sheitel underneath)
In this book it clearly states Rav Elyashivs preference for the tichel and his guidelines for what is considered a modest wig (most of the wigs today do not meet these guidelines at all) – there is also a whole section in the book by Rav Zilberstein about modesty and wigs.
Again- I know that there is a heter for a wig (which was a great debate among Poskim) my point (which is clearly not being understood by the other posters on this thread) is that most of the wigs today are not modest, they beautify the woman wearing it- which defeats the purpose of the mitzvah of kisui rosh. A woman’s head covering is meant to conceal a woman’s beauty – most of the wigs today highlight a woman’s beauty. The wigs from years ago did not make a woman more attractive even if they were made out of human hair. The technology was not the same as today.
There are many letters by recent Gedolim stating how most of todays wigs are a great breach of modesty- they are accentuating what they are meant to conceal. Arguing about this point which is so clearly obvious is a waste of time and energy.

Kisui rosh is clearly about modesty. The Chofetz Chaim wrote a sefer “Geder Olam” explaining the great punishment a woman brings upon herself and her husband if she walks around with her hair uncovered as this is a severe breach of modesty. He keeps repeating how immodest it is for a woman to walk around with uncovered hair –
In Chapter 7 which starts off with “An explanation of the greatness of the character trait of modesty, the reward for being modest in this world and in Olam Haba, and in an opposite sense, G-d forbid, her “reward” if she follows a lifestyle of immodesty”
    It says further on:
“Therefore, a woman must accustom herself to the character trait of modesty, and in so doing it will be good for her here in this world and there in Olam Haba.
Now, from all this we can think deeply about how much a wife must be careful in this matter of her hair, or her arms or her chest, that they should not be seen outside.
Also, the Zohar in perushat Naso was very strict in this regard, that the hair of a (married) woman should not be visible at all, quoted here as follows: Rebbe Chizkiyah said: “Insanity should be invoked on any man who allows his wife to let her hair be seen in public, as this is one of the pillars of modesty which is the responsibility of the woman. The woman who exposes her hair in public to enhance/beautify her appearance causes poverty in her family and is the cause for her children to be simple and devoid of any importance, and will cause bad things to happen to her family. What was the cause of all this; her hair, which was apparent from under her head covering. And if this is so in her own house, how much even more so it an enormous arrogance to appear like that in public… ”
So if todays wigs are enhancing and beautifying a womans appearance (unlike the wigs from years ago which were quite unattractive), how is this not a great breach of tznius?? Why is this different than a woman walking around with her own hair showing- which is usually not even as nice as the current wigs? The wigs today are having the same effect on men as a woman’s natural hair (actually much more so)
Kol hakavod to those women who are wearing short, stiff wiggy wigs, those are modest as they do not beautify the woman wearing it, but most women under 60 are not wearing wigs like that anymore.
