Illinois had their primaries today, and one very questionable candidate and one neo-Nazi won primaries.
Arthur Jones, a Republican, i a prominent white supremacist and leader of some random neo-Nazi organization, running unopposed, won the Republican Primary in IL-3. Fortunately, it’s a blue area, and he has little to no chance of winning. (This is not the first time he ran, he ran a few times in the past, but lost the primary. He only won this time because he was running unopposed.)
And then there’s Danny Davis. Davis, a Democrat is the incumbent in IL-7, and has occupied the seat since 1997. After recent scrutiny over alleged meetings with Louis Farrakhan, Davis publicly confirmed his relationship, despite Farrakhan’s hate speech. While I don’t know what his thoughts on Jews and other minorities are, it seems very suspicious. As I’m writing this, 85% of the vote is in, and Davis got 68,643 votes, out of 92,611 votes in the Democratic primary, and 97,856 votes altogether.

He seems pretty safe in his seat, being that he’s a 21 year incumbent. Jones has very little chance of winning. So, if you live in the district that either of them are running for, do not vote for them!

What other solutions are there to make sure that those types of candidates don’t win elections? Let’s hear your opinions!

Jones only won the primary because nobody else bothered running for a district that is guaranteed to go Democrat anyway. If there had been *any* other candidate Jones would have lost. So the only way to stop something like this, if you care to, is to make sure someone is running in every district, even if it’s completely futile. Do you really think it’s worthwhile?

The main point is that the GOP has no control over this, and is not responsible for him in any way. He is not a Republican. Once nominations closed there was nothing the GOP could have done to take him off the ballot.

Davis is also a Moonie and a member of the Democratic Socialists of America.,

If he’s a Moonie, he’s pro-gun. The Moonies recently had a shindig in Virginia where each couple was required to bring an AR-15 or equivalent. If there were legal difficulties in obtaining one, they could substitute a $700 gift card from a sporting goods store to show they were planning to get one. It’s not clear what would happen if the gift card were for Dick’s Sporting Goods, which announced they were no longer selling AR-15s at around that time.

“The main point is that the GOP has no control over this, and is not responsible for him in any way. He is not a Republican.”

    Sorry. I don’t agree.
In some states, such as my own, Connecticut, the courts have ruled that a Town Party Committee can have a member of the party stricken from their rolls if that person disavows the party’s platform, rules, beliefs, etc.
Once, stricken of party affiliation, the elector can’t run for the nomination or be on the general election ballot as the candidate of the party.

The CT Appellate Courts rued on this within the past 3 years when a Town committee instructed the Registrar of Voters to remove party affiliation from a member.

@Milhouse, That’s right, no one bothered running. What’s sickening is that 20,339 people voted for Jones. They could have not voted. They could have written someone in. But they voted for a neo-Nazi, white supremacist, Holocaust denier. That is shameful.

@AviK, he is not a member of Democratic Socialists of America. I am. There is no anti-Semitism, racism, or white supremacy in the organization.
What he is a member of is the National Socialist Movement. He ran for mayor of Milwaukee on the National Socialist White People’s Party (which has been outlawed since, along with the American Nazi Party) in 1976.
But Jones is not a Socialist. He’s a far-right extremist. The Nazi Party, which in full is the National Socialist German Workers’ Party, was not Socialist either. They were far-right extremists. They called themselves Socialist, although they were not. (North Korea calls itself the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. It is none of those things. If everything was the way it was called, North Korea would be a free country. The same applies with the Islamic Republic of Iran.)

Avi, you just uttered a logical contradiction (or you don’t remember who the Moonies are). The Moonies were founded as a cult by a Korean preacher who doubled as an operative for the South Korean version of the CIA. The Moonies specifically lobbied Congress to be as anti-Communist as possible. (Lots of undercover stuff going there, which seems to have been forgotten.)

For a person to be both a Moonie and a Democratic Socialist is like saying he is both a follower of Farrakhan and a white supremacist. This guy is obviously objectionable for many reasons, but the two that you quoted can’t both be true.

@samklein30, It’s a very liberal district. Jones has pretty much no chance of winning the general election.

Clarification: I personally have nothing against Democratic Socialists. It seems that Avi does, which is why I worded my comment the way I did. I have nothing against any member of a sane, non-antisemitic political party. It’s political competition and dialogue (argument?) that keeps our democracy healthy.

And a healthy democracy rejects neo-Nazis, white supremacists, Holocaust deniers and all the rest of that miserable crew.

Chiefshmerel, you misread AviK’s post. He said Davis — not Jones — is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America.

Chiefshmerel, socialism is fundamentally anti-Jewish as it involves the robbery of people’s private property. Moreover, the DSA would make the already bloated, failed welfare state even more bloated. From where would the money come? By soaking working people – and Chazal enjoined the authorities not to encumber the public (this, in fact, led to the split in the Tanachic kingdom).

    Midwest,
    1. In 2004, Davis “crowned” the late Rev. Sun Myung Moon in a religious ceremony at the Dirksen Senate Office Building,. So far as I know he has never disavowed Moon.
    2. Anyone who still believes in socialism is not sane.
    3. Democratic socialists are often the biggest anti-communists around. There is no fight like a family fight.

@yehudayona, my mistake. I was thinking about Jones as I read it, and he came to mind first.

And by the way, there’s a difference between Democratic Socialism and democratic socialism. I’m a democratic socialist, although I am a registered Democrat.

There is no anti-Semitism, racism, or white supremacy in the organization.

Tell that to the lady running against Cuomo
