I started using floating wicks for shabbos candles. Mostly water, bit of olive oil. They start to sputter very loudly. So much, that I actually don’t have any menucha on shabbos night anymore.
What is your advice.
I used to put quarter water three quarters oil = sputters
Half water half oil = sputters
Three quarters water quarter oil = sputters
I put the floater wick mostly below, mostly above, midway pn the pad… still doesn’t matter.
Some candles are sputtering very loudly, and they can do it for over an hour.
Need advice and need it quickly !!
I bought the “super wicks” to try waiting them. I previoudly used the metal holders but they were too long to clean. I thought the floating wicks would be easier…
Yeah, I need advise too. It was some time ago when we had one of those things EXPLODE in the middle of the night!! It popped straight out of the glass and started to burn!!! By a Nes someone ‘happened to be up then… They’re not only noisy, they can be VERY DANGEROUS!!

The water will cause sputtering. Use only oil.
Waiting the wicks will not help, you may have to wait forever. Maybe you’d like to weight them. But no matter, use only oil. If you want to save on the oil, use smaller cups and less oil. No water. Hatzlachah.
The cause for the sputtering is that both oil and water are drawn into the wick at the same time.
I previoudly used the metal holders but they were too long to clean.
That’s what pipe cleaners are for. But you need to get real ones from a tobacco shop, the ones designed for crafts don’t clean well. I like metal holders just long enough to keep the wick straight but short enough for the flame to drop down to soak up oil from the cup bottom.
I was told never to use oil without water below as the glass could overheat. But that would only happen if the flame touches it directly.
I never noticed such a warning on any cups.
If you do use floating wicks, only use them with straight walled cups, not globe shaped cups.
Why? There bulb shape cups that say oil candle holders on the box.
Because the wick can float to the side, putting the flame in direct contact with the narrower top.
I use glasses with 3/4 water and a little oil on top , depending on how many hours i want it to burn. I use the small floating wicks with the red wicks not the white as they burn out too quickly. I use many candles… and stay up until everyone has burnt out. Every once in a while they splatter. It depends on the oil, use olive oil only if it is mixed , not pure it has different smells and does not work as well and gives off black smoke and makes the ceiling black (thats what happened for a while when i bought a big tin of olive oil from national liquidators on sale of course) I love using oil as it is clean and neat. Do NOT fill up with oil otherwise it gets too hot and then you hear crack and the glasses break , i learnt my lesson the first couple of yrs.
Also when you light the wick do it that one drop of wax falls on the cork to make it stay in the center. have a good shabbos and bring much light into this world.
My family uses full cups of oil without water in straight-walled glass cups every Chanukah, with the (non-floating) wicks in metal holders. We have had no trouble.

be “pure, not mixed,” not “mixed, not pure.”)
i meant only one type of olive oil , not 2 types of olive oil, Pure olive oil, if you look at some of the cheaper olive oil it says pomance olive oil etc. You dont need to spend 7.50 for a 50 pack. I go through 50 packs every few weeks, you can buy them in little boxes of 50 or containers of 100 for a lot less money.
yes for chanukah i use all olive oil but with those little glasses, every shabbos I use the bigger glasses and 3/4 water. If i would use it all with oil i would have to stay up all shabbos to watch it. NEVER LEAVE THE CANDLES OVERNIGHT ON OWN.
