Is making a vort necessary? I’ve heard of some in Queens who don’t bother with it. Is that true?

A vort is not necessary. Essentially it is an engagement party with a dvar Torah

It is being phased out, I see people combining the l’chaim and the vort.

The reason they’re not doing vorts anymore in queens is because the street numbers are so confusing so no one ever shows up

    That’s probably true, actually.

Why should both a l’chaim *and* vort *ever* be necessary?

    Because of Siegelman’s

L’chaim is for the night they get engaged, after he proposes, and for immediate family only. So both sides can get to know each other. The vort is usually a week or two weeks later for the gantzeh velt.

Where is Queens? Is that a section of Boro Park?

Queens County is the lesser half of Kings County.

I’m from the boro park/ flatbush center of the universe, and all my friends and relatives did vorts. So it’s the first time I’m hearing of not doing it. Interesting.

You can have both by having the L’chaim at the same location as the vort half an hour before.

Depends on what the families want. Personally we are happy to combine the two.

Speaking as a guest. I’m just as happy to show up once to say mazel tov. At the chuppa.

Is the emoji in the title supposed to be antisemitic?

    #1273700

No, why would you say that?

It’s an animal often used in racist comparisons.

    #1273719

I did not know that, and it is not supposed to mean that here.

What’s the meaning of a boar by the vort?

Boris Yeltsin was a Jew, may his memory be a blessing.

Dunno if he had an engagement party but he had a communist one.

Maybe the boar is a sign that it is better to have a vort 🎉 than a bort 🚹 (acronym for Boris Yeltsin and sounds like boar). But if you’re Boris Yeltsin’s mom then it is better to have both 🚹🎉.

Thank you and this concludes the first segment of the boar files. 🔚

I have no idea how that boar emoji got there. I’m typing from a laptop, I can’t even use emojis.

He was? According to wikipedia, he was the first head of state in 113 years to be buried in a church ceremony.

Looks like I was wrong WTP!

Wow. I Googled it but didn’t do a good enough job because it looks like he wasn’t as far as I know. He was supposedly good for Russian Jewry, or something.

Sorry! Well, there goes my rhyme.

The proper emoji for a vort is a toad.
