There was a guy in my kollel who was making avoda zara jokes that I found really distasteful. He compared Hillary Clinton’s remaining supporters to Roman polytheists, and stuff like that. He also said that it’s muttar to scoop a bagel. So I punched him through the window.

What’s wrong with scooping a bagel? I did that when I was a kid to make cubes with the squishy bread. The cubes tasted better then unsquished bagel.
It’s only muttar to punch a boy if it’s fruit punch and you’re his husband, sometimes.

If you think one of the criteria for being in Kollel is not scooping bagels shows how shallow some people are. This thread should be shut down now.
Well that’s the point – if it’s a coed kollel, that answers the question, doesn’t it?!!
Rebyidd23: sorry but I am not a “horrible person” since I sometimes scoop out a bagel. However, if you think this is a terrible avla I will make sure not to be meshadech with you and your family.

LB: IMHO, scooping a bagel is taking out the soft center leaving only the outside crust. This way it makes a neater sandwich. This is also done for Italian heroes.
Coed kollels on the other hand….

Why didn’t my college career counselor not tell me about this?
I’d love to be a professional bagel scooper. The chewy outside of the bagel is amazingly delicious. Plus, the soft inside can be recycled for edible dice.

Either way, people who do this are not “horrible” and I hope that you take a more reasonable approach to your frustrations in the future.
I think you need to see a psychotherapist regarding your bagel obsession.
As as teenager on school vacation days, I davened at a shul in which the a couple of retirees took it upon themselves to fetch bagels and assorted fillings for the weekday morning minyan to boost attendance (and they’d clean up afterwards).
When he could, the rav of the shul would stick around and have his morning coffee with those who weren’t hurrying off to work. Looking back, it was a pleasant, relaxed way for the rav to interact informally with about a dozen of his congregants.
A number of them had the “minhag” of scooping out the bagel innards which they justified as a calorie-saving move.
I’m not sure how many calories were actually saved after adding the fillings (butter, cream cheese, egg salad, etc.), but that’s the only time I can recall seeing people do that.
what confuses me is the idea that people scoop the middle and eat the outside. If i was going to eat only one of the two, it would be the middle.
