In general SEMINARIES ARE CASH COWS so odds of getting a scholarship are slim to none. I know in some cities the Federation will cover your Visa costs if you do some paper work. Also, there is a new seminary that is opening that claims they can give scholarships,so you can suggest that to her as well. Hatzlacha!

Sorry, I forgot to mention that she wants to go to BJJ..also how does the Pell grants work?

Firstly, in order to qualify for most scholarships, she would need to be enrolled through an accredited college, like Touro for their “Study Abroud” program. (May require SAT score and a committment of attending the college once they return form seminary). The school should also have details or grants on scholarships available to financially eligible students.

Next, I would do a google search for college scholarships and apply for anything that looks interesting. You never know!

As a note, there is a grant available from the State of Israel to seminaries, but only a few American seminaries take advantage of it. It is called “Masa” and you can google it for their website as well. If anyone has additional information, I’d be very interested to get more details myself. 🙂

    Make aliyah.

    No kidding.

My daughter attends a midrasha that has an Israeli program and an Anglo program. I can tell you that we, as Israelis, are paying less than half of what the Anglos are paying. For pretty much the same program and the same amenities.

The differences? The American girls are two to a room; the Israelis are four to a room. The American program is in English. The Americans have a curfew.

Masa works with a lot of seminaries and yeshivos, and gives about $1000 to virtually all who apply.

MASA offers $1000 to ALL applicants, and a maximum to US residents of $4000 if you’re income is less than $22,500 per person in the household (including boys learning in yeshiva). Some of the more right-wing seminaries are a little leary of (being known that they) take MASA, so they go thru “Peninat Yisrael” a clearing company that arranges and coordinates the MASA program for them. Peninat takes $600 administrative fee, so the girl only gets $3400.

Pell (also known as “FAFSA) is a federal grant offered to those enrolled in a US college. Like the Tour Israel option mentioned above, HTC in Skokie, IL, and MJI in Detroit both offer opportunities to enroll and learn abroad. HTC like Touro requires (decent) SAT scores, MJI doesn’t. HOWEVER, MJI costs considerably more to register. (HTC also charges registration up front, MJI, I THINK, doesn’t require $$ up front, but take a bigger piece of the $$$ before forwarding to the seminary.)

TAP is a NYS grant similar to FAFSA, and that would be the only reason to pick Touro over one of the others.

Most seminaries due to the current economy, will offer a small discount, if requested.

TTI (Raizel Reit) is working on an ISRAEL option. Don’t know if it will be ready in time for this coming September, though.

If you live in NY and got over an 1875 on your SAT, then you MIGHT be eligible for the Byrd scholarship (1500 @ year for 4 years!)

General note: Seminaries ARE a for-profit business. Don’t like it? jealous? get over it! or start you’re own if it’s so easy. I don’t own one, but I know a few of the owners, and yes, they are making money, big deal, they are entitled to charge what they want. BUT, none, of them, I REPEAT, none of them are making TONS of money. They are comfortable. and why shouldn’t they be?

Anyone know of any update on this? Any more options? Particulary for USA/Israeli girls?

Masa is an organization that gives out a lot of $ for yeshiva students and seminary girls if it is their first year in Israel

They are run by the Jewish Agency which was created to grant Jews the right to see and experience Israel. It is a Zionist organization but lately it has been helping frum people as well.

They are a few MASA organized events throughout the year that everyone under MASA must attend. I remember when I was in Yeshiva it was just a lot of talk about Zionism etc.

I am currently in Yerushalayim in yeshiva on a Masa grant. All we had to do was hear some stuff about the history of the state and the yeshiva is required to make sure we “see the land of Israel” (this means going to the Kosel and taking a few trips a year)

Your best bet is to speak to the administration of the seminaries you’re considering. Jeff Seidel used to give scholarships and I imagine he still does – but again, I’m not sure if it applies to those who are already here.

Just so you know, BJJ doesn’t take Masa, but they automatically shave a few thousand off the top of their tuition instead. (I think it’s because of a fundamental objection to taking money from an institution to which they object.)

    #1115038

Don’think MASA works unless you live in America.

Really? I’m surprised… I think that the point of Masa is to attract new olim. Therefore, it would make sense that they would try to attract people from everywhere, not just America, no?

    #1115040

I don’t know. But it certainly doesn’t work if you already live in Israel.
