this afternoon-10 of teves in the Mir yeshiva in yerushliyim there was a shmuz from the Rosh Yeshiva R’ Nosson Tzvi Finkel shlit”a, the r”y shlit”a who usually can hardly be herd due to his weakness and medical condition was herd loud and clear, and was very emotnil, as he called upon the yeshiva to daven and learn extra hard due to the matziv in the south and due to a number of avrechim from yeshiva who are very sick. One of the main things that was brought up was the fact that a bochur in yeshiva is mashpia directly on what happens in the south and the war in Gaza. Another thing that was brought up was the cell phone issue “a bochur can not learn with a cell phone in his pocket” after the shmuz tehilim was said led by the r”y and the mashgiach r’ ahrhon chodosh shlit”a who was also very emotnil. May we be zocheh that this war be finished with no more tragic episodes as we saw today.

He only said that one can’t learn Torah with a cell phone. He is not forbidding them. With so many parents far away from their children it is incumbent upon each bochur to speak to his parent at least once a day and reassure them that he is okay via cell phone-or just a call from a regular telephone. Parents out of EY hear the media make it sound so chaotic-that I know that it takes a ton of emunah to allow their sons to stay in EY. I live in EY and my friends who have children learning here are going crazy with fear and worry. They allow their children to learn here davka because they have the ability to be in touch with them instantly.
Cell phones should be off during shiurim, so as not to disturb others. If it must be within reach, as I know many parents who want to be able to reach their children at all times, turn it to silent and only check it once an hour ect. That way learners will not be disturbed and through this extra learning, we’ll have more zechusim to be safe from harm….

But he didnt say that cell phones in general are assur… Fine- leave them in your coats by the coat closet or whatever they have there…. just the same idea- off or on silent. But check them every few hours to prevent unnecessary worrying by the mothers…

Bogen, he also didnt say you couldn’t leave your phone in your coat. Your interpolation is just as valid as havesomeseichels. Maybe someone will clarify this.
I think its nice in theory, but with a war going on, I would want to reach my kids at all times.
Until the Rosh HaYeshiva states that bochurim cannot go out for coffee breaks during seder, there is no reason why they cannot utilize the coffee break to check their phone that is in their coat pocket also. And that should be enough to assuage their mothers’ worries.
The Rosh HaYeshiva does not need my haskomo, but I have seen personally how distruptive it is (for ones’ self) to have a cell phone within reach while learning. And an entire Beis Medrash full of bochurim with cell phones magnifies the problem (so that it is constantly noticable how much battala it causes).

The phone issue is just about people taking time away from their learning to checki their emails and text messages and walking out to answer phone calls. If its kept outside in your coat, it shouldnt be a problem.
There are warnings that the arabs in Yerushalayim and on the “west bank” will try to do some damage as they did last year (Mercaz haRav). All bochrim should be very careful now, and should ask their Rosh Yeshiva if they can be permitted to keep their cellphone with them in case of any incidents. A cellphone also should have preprogrammed into it the number for Hatzolah.
