Most people eat an apple dipped in honey, and other of the simanim found in the machzor, on the first night of Rosh Hashana. Some people eat their own made up simanim also, for example, celery with rasins as a siman to have a raise in salary. Does anyone have other interesting simanim ideas?

We ate baby carrots for the first several years of our marriage until our first child was born.

Yes. Eggs – we should break our enemies’ eggs (vehamayvin yavin).

Chup, it’s called Rubia in some language. The Yahi Ratzon is similar to the one on carrots.

Presumably we shouldn’t eat old Simanim that relate to random languages that we don’t speak anymore. I try to only do the Hebrew and English Simanim as those are my languages.

    “Whats the simian for it?”

As we are not related to the apes, we cannot know what words, or sounds, or signs they have–if any–for blackeyed peas, or any other siman. Maybe Dian Fossey or Jane Goodall wrote it down somewhere.

BTW, my m-i-l, she should live and be well, always ate the fish eye but would leave one for whichever grandchild wanted it, as long as there were no fights resulting in blackeyed kids. She is over 90, k9ahara, so maybe there are unknown benefits to this custom. Can’t hurt to try it, right?

Gefilte fish, so you should be filled with blessing throughout the year.

Leek-for urinary tract health. Black eyed peas- for their continued success. A half baked challah – so I can raise some dough.

    How about these:

olives and peas- “we should ALL LIVE IN PEACE”

or: sole fish and rice- “may our SOULS RISE and be elevated to new spiritual heights

or (for all you dieters out there): a thin fig- “to have a SLIM FIGure (okay, now THAT was my WIFE’S)

don’t forget to have a Shehechiyanu for the second night! We usually have a star fruit or chinese apple.

Thanks, BH. There’s someone in Montreal (French Canada) who actually eats it.

The simanim can be incorporated into the actual meal, rather than the forshpeiz, because otherwise, no one is hungry for all the good food that follows.

olive and peas- “we should ALL LIVE IN PEACE”
