If, when in polite company, one must sneeze, is it proper to let it out (in a tissue or [in a worst case scenario] in an arm, of course) or rather to hold it in and supress the sneeze?

Let it out in a tissue if you don’t have a tissue excuse yourself from the room to get one.

This is serious stuff. Nothing to sneeze at.

If you were sitting in the Oval Office talking with the President of the United States, would you ask for a tissue (or take one out of your pocket) and give a thunderous sneeze?

Yes i would sneeze in the oval office unlike other bodily functions it is not rude or unseemly to sneeze, just let me know if obama says g-d bless you or you are so good looking.

if you hold it in, you’re going to make some funny faces at them. say ‘excuse me. i need to sneeze’, turn to the side and sneeze into your elbow. or say ‘excuse me for one moment. i need to go find a tissue’. i think thats less rude then holding in the sneeze

The best thing to do is to sneeze into (not just toward) your elbow so you don’t send your germs flying all over everyone else.

If you’re davening at the time and find it impossible to sneeze without letting loose an ear-splitting “AAACHOOOOOO”, suppress it. My husband begs you…

Never, ever suppress a sneeze. You can do damage to yourself.

So, you would make that thunderous HAAHAACCHHOOO in the Oval Office, during your disussions with the President? (Or in shul during the quiet Shemone Esrei, when you will be heard from one end of the large shul to the other.)

I’d rather have a loud sneeze than a burst blood vessel.

Please explain. If I forget to sneeze it’s dangerous? I don’t apprehend.

Thank you haifagirl I think you are right that it is not healthy to suppress a sneeze. I was thinking one might damage their eardrum. Please feedback from the Medical (Doctors and Nurses) Posters.

Google “suppress sneeze” (without the quotes) and you will get a lot of information. Not all of it is accurate, of course, but much is.

It’s not healthy to hold it in. Some people are able to just let out a little squeak, I am not one of those! I have come to accept that when I have to sneeze it will be loud and big but there is nothing I can do about it.

I do think it’s possible to sneeze without an accompanying “YEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAACCCCCCCCCCHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO”

    (*sniff* excuse me)

My wife asked me if I enjoy a good cry sometimes. I told her no but I do enjoy a good sneeze. She told me I have a non-existant emotional gradient.

I almost always suppress the sound of my sneeze and just let the air out though my almost closed lips.

If Obama was sitting there I would let it out – in his face! 🙂

It is never good to hold in a sneeze. Let them go if that is what they are itching to do. In fact, it is truly dangerous and responsible for belly buttons popping out, and often the person then goes flying and zig zagging around the room like a filled balloon that slips out of your hands before you can knot it.

If you have to sneeze; sneeze.

You need to show respect for the office of President regardless of who sits in that chair.

Its always entertaining to hang out with people who like to hold it in. Like, with a regular sneezer u know what the protocoll is. Conversation gets interrupted..akward face..wait for it…wait for it…wait for iiiit… Bless U!! Carry on. With these other rare individuals u have know idea why they suddenly grab u, hold ther breath and then make a really strange pinched up face for about 9 seconds.. shudder violently and then “pheeew.” Ur like um.. what just happened?!

I would sneeze and say BLAST YOU instead of BLESS YOU to obama. But that really only works if obama is the one sneezing
