Remember last year when the forecasters said nyc was going to get a lot of snow and deblasio closed all the streets and then nothing happened

Who thinks there’s going to be a repeat?

I think it might be the opposite. Last time was a reaction to the previous snow incident in which the streets were not plowed and a bunch of people got stranded. Next time in reaction to that we may have a snowstorm and business as usual.

“Remember last year when the forecasters said nyc was going to get a lot of snow and deblasio closed all the streets and then nothing happened”

I dont remeber that at all. I rember when less than predicted fell but 6 -to 12 inches of snow cant be called “nothing happned”

Parts of long island had over 26 inches. (I assume you are reffering to Juno)

Granted this that wasnt “something we have never seen” which is how it was described leading into it but it wasnt “nothing” And as experience has shown better safe than sorry. Especially when you consider previous snowstorms that we had been ill prepared for as Rebyid pointed out.

I’m saying it was overhyped (you seem very literal, ubequitin) i think the forecasters are trying to sound very vague so that they aren’t prove wrong this time

Shutting down public transportation before snow actually accumulates and literally stopping the city in its tracks because of a hyped snow-storm is not just being cautious, it’s silly and counter-productive.

They are supposedly working on a better weather tracking system in NY though, so hopefully things will get better down the road.

Mammele, forecasting is as much an art as a science. In the NYC area, the track a storm takes deferment new where a storm hits and tracks can shift at last minute. When the track takes a storm thru the northwest suburbs ( NJ, Rockland County ) we in Long Island will get very little. However in a storm that tracks east, like that winter storm you referred to, residents of Suffolk County on LI got clobbered. Several years ago commuters were stranded on cold and dark trains for hours. It takes time to move trains to railyards and you can’t wait until the last minute to see if the storm track changed. They’d rather on the side of passenger safety and I agree

The walking was so treacherous that our shul had a shiur after davening followed by an early mincha so people wouldn’t have to walk back later and then walk home in the dark at 6 pm in blizzard conditions when there would be 18 inches of snow on ground

surprisingly enough i am actually closer than most meteorologists are to the actual weather conditions on a daily basis.

this just goes to show Gadlus Ha’adom

It might set the record in Central Park. As of 8pm on Motzei Shabbos, it is about 1 1/2 inches from the record and it is still snowing

Rebyidd was right, they predicted 6-10 yesterday and it’s more than 2 feet!
