Its a song contest in Europe and a few other countries outside. Israel and Australia participate

The winner’s home country gets the right to host the next years contest

This years winner was a woman from Israel, who won in lisbon, Portugal (Who won last year) , So next years contest will be in Israel.

Whats the chilul hashem of some goiyeshe/secular contest being held in EY? There are all sorts of sporting competitions, Christian bible competitions, dog shows, etc. that are are NOT items that the heimeshe tzibur really cares about but roughly 60 percent of Israelis do care about. If your not interested, “change the channel” so to say….stay home and listen to the newest album from MBD or Shloime Gavornlik

I think it should be held in Caesarea. This way it doesn’t seem like a European boycott of Israel but is at the same time not in Yerushalayim Ir Hakodesh. International politics is complicated business.

    1. Once you agree to allow secular culture in Eretz Yisrael (we had the option to ally with the Muslims against the zionists, and we did not do so), you are stuck. “Eurovision” is no more a “hillul ha-Shem” than the rest of zionist culture. It doesn’t make any sense to object to “Eurovision” unless yuou are objecting to the rest of secular entertaininment (which frequently involves undress male and female performers, as that is the nature of their culture). Indeed, since almost all performers in “Eurovision” are goyim, it is much less of a Hillul ha-Shem then the typical secular entertainment in Eretz Yisrael.

    2. If the zionists get “Eurovision” in Jerusalem it would be a major accomplishment for them since all the European countries do not consider any part of Jerusalem to be part of Israel. Don’t be surprised if it gets moved to the internationally recognized capital of Israel: Tel Aviv.

MBD’s most famous song Yidden was actually Genghis Khan from the 1979 edition of Eurovision

Apparently, the Eurovision musical competition in 2019 will be held at the King David Hotel in Yerushalayim which the Dan Hotel chain just announced will be renamed the King Donald Hotel in conjunction with this competition and his role in moving the U.S. embassy back to ir hakodesh.

This won’t be the first time Israel is playing host- last time, around 20 yrs ago it was held in Jerusalem’s International Convention Center, more famously known as Binyanei Hauma. Apparently, it’s too small to hold the current event- only 2 sites in Jerusalem are large enough for a 10,000+ crowd, and sorry, GH, the King David Hotel is not one of them.
Let’s daven that by next year, the world’s perspective will have changed and the goyim will flock to Yerushalyim to hear Dvar hashem and witness the true glory of the Jewish people.

I don’t think that is the issue, it is the Chillul shabbos involved. It usually is a Shabbos event.

Winnie….If the guys with the yellow flags on Eastern Parkway are any indicator, looks like the Eurovision competition will be held on schedule and the world will still be focused next year on the 2018 Republican losses in the mid-term elections and why it wasn’t the Donald’s fault.

True, Gananit, and it would be much more appropriate and logistically feasible to have it in say Tel Aviv, but the host country usually hosts in their capital, and for Israel to host anywhere but Jerusalem would be a statement that they do not want to make.
The chilul shabbos is a real issue since the event always takes place Saturday night, and this time of the year Shabbos is out late. I can’t see the frum population of Yerushalayim accepting it without protest. If a frum mayor is elected in the coming months, perhaps it could be avoided.
which brings me back to the best solution- that Moshiach should come before the Eurovision does. Despite GH’s cynicism, waiting and believing in Moshiach’s imminent arrival is an eker emunah for chabad and non-chabad alike.

It is not like a Pride parade held in public. It is indoors. If you dont like, don’t attend. There is no sanhedrin today to force people to behave one way or another. Treat people with love and kindness and try to win people over.
For anyone who is anti Zionist: if it were up to you, the government would not be jewish. Would you ask the goyim to stop the competition? They would laugh at you. You cant have it both ways

In general the charedi public does not understand the non-relgious public. They do not seperate Anti-Religious from non-religious. Most people are non-religious. Anti-relgious are the ones who fight yeshivas and such. Non-religious generally have a live and let live attitude , However they expect the same in return.

Fighting things they like is a losing cause and can turn them into enemies. One always has to pick battles carefully. Picking the wrong battle can backfire.

While the charedi population could care less about Eurovision, it seems many chilonim Do care and there might be backlash if their “fun” is stopped

    I don’t understand.
Why is this collection of goyim coming to Israel a bigger chilul Hashem than the soccer ball games they have every week on shabbos where hundreds and thousands of yidden go to? Or the big pride parade in Tel Aviv each year? Or all the stores and whatnot open on shabbos? Or the hatred between us yidden?

Shopping- you are right, except this one gets a lot of international attention. I think major protests against it will not stop it – despite what the frum minority thinks, as ZD said, it is very important and a source of pride to a lot of secular Israelis, and an opportunity to gain political points by having the world gather in Yerushalayim. Public protests will surely lead to much maligning of the frum population in the international press, which will just add to the Chilul Hashem. When the pride parade took place in Jerusalem, many gedolim said the best thing to do was to ignore it, not to feed the publicity. Could be that will be the position in this case as well, as pained as we are by the chilul shabbos and anti-Torah culture. Maybe the frum municipal council members will be able to work behind the scenes, at least to minimize chilul shabbos- the coming election will determine how much power they can wield in such matters.
Ready now, how does posting to YW a petition to stop the contest influence any of the people who will actually be running the contest?

It seems to me that the chareidi community tries to have it both ways.
Generally, they oppose the legitimacy of the State and don’t observe or recognize any celebration or observance created by the State. They probably didn’t observe Yom Yerushalayim which is ironic. Without Israel, they would have access to the Kotel, and they certainly wouldn’t have anything near the size of the current chareidi population living in Jerusalem or municipal government responsive to their needs. Yet, they still expect the State to cater to their needs and desires and not the chilonim.

This type of event is really not the kind of issue that the frum tzibur needs to be wasting time on or calling attention to this or similar events. As someone noted, its an indoor event not parading down a main street in yerushalayim, does not expose others to so called “pritzus” (which I think is a stretch anyway for Eurovision) and otherwise is not the kind of event that warrants creating a further schism with the secular community. Choose your battles strategically.

    #1521014

Agree. In the ideal world this should be stopped
In the interim other ‘Events’ ought to stopped first.

Make these a worthy Campaign issue
