Are you Jewish? Whoever heard of a Yid that doesn’t know of SYMS!?
(Unless you never spent time in the Eastern United States. Then it is a forgivable offense.)November 19, 2008 12:23 pm at 12:23 pm #626090
I’ve heard of one-me!
What is SYMS???November 19, 2008 2:20 pm at 2:20 pm #626091
A large clothing store with many branches on the east coast. They carry good quality name brand clothes and have cheap prices. Twice yearly they have a huge sale called the ‘Syms Bash’ (note my post above explaining why its called that). Since prices are slashed so drasticly for those 2 weeks, the stores are usually packed with Frum people. Btw, the owner is a Yid- Sy Syms.November 19, 2008 2:32 pm at 2:32 pm #626092
OOOOOOOh! The store that is pronounced “sims”? I thought it’s some kind of organization S.Y.M.S that stands for something. Of course I’ve heard of it.November 19, 2008 3:33 pm at 3:33 pm #626093
Begging tommorow Yidden from all over America will begin to be “Oleh Regel” to a Syms nearby.
It is a true Kiddush Hashem and a sight to behold!November 19, 2008 3:58 pm at 3:58 pm #626094
so JOSEPH- whats that CHiyuv all about?November 19, 2008 4:32 pm at 4:32 pm #626095
smartcookie, I think there is a beferesh Rashi…November 19, 2008 4:51 pm at 4:51 pm #626096
I HOPE THIS IS A SARCASTIC JOKE BECAUSE I DONT GET IT OTHERWISE.November 19, 2008 6:20 pm at 6:20 pm #626097
smartcookie, I’l try to find the Rashi for you. I think its in Bereishis.
From the best of my memory (translated):
”It is a chiyuv mdaraisa for all Yidden in galus to be Oleh Regel to Syms twice a year. This chiyuv is fulfilled during the Bash. When the 3rd Beis Hamikdash is built, this chiyuv will no longer apply, and to Yerushalayim shall we go.”November 19, 2008 6:47 pm at 6:47 pm #626098
JOSEPH- I dont take this as funny. Dont mix Rashis about the Bais Hamikdosh into this concoction.I take Yerushalayim and Moshiach very seriously.November 19, 2008 7:34 pm at 7:34 pm #626099
smartcookie, do you want the exact mekor?November 19, 2008 8:16 pm at 8:16 pm #626100
ok ok, I’ll save it for Purim. (Although thays between Bashes! )November 19, 2008 8:28 pm at 8:28 pm #626101
Joseph, it’s not a Rashi. It’s written next to two other mitzvos – the mitzva to have pizza on motzei Pesach, and the mitzva to go to a concert on motzei Shabbos Nachamu.November 19, 2008 8:33 pm at 8:33 pm #626102

I’ve been living on the East Coast for over 40 years and I couldn’t figure out for the life of me what SYMS stood for. I thougnt it was some kind of roshei tavos. Maybe if they wrote it Syms instead of SYMS more people would “get it”.
We try to patronize the frum stores exclusively. It’s worth the extra money not to be bombarded by all the pritzus.November 19, 2008 9:19 pm at 9:19 pm #626106
I must acknowledge my mistake. You speak true words of wisdom. And I shall repent and correct my errant ways.

Will Syms be open on Thursday, even though it’s a holiday, since it’s in middle of the Bash? Will the Wednesday or Friday hours be affected?November 24, 2008 2:06 am at 2:06 am #626108

On YW we bash each other all year round, and it’s free. I think that is a better deal.
