    Hey everyone,

I'm writing a book and I gotta do some research. What are the top seminaries all girls apply to and dream of getting into?

Thanks. Sorry, I'm clueless about such stuff.

I don't know about the non-BY types but...
BJJ - smart, academic... very difficult to get into, around for many years
Mesores Rochel - smart, academic, very difficult to get into - around for about 7 years
Hadar - not too hard to get into anymore, used to be harder to get accepted, very yeshivish, considered high on the list
These days - Nachlas had over 1,500 applicants - its for fun loving by girls - decent amount of schoolwork, chilled atmosphere, real by type girls - only like 5 years old...

Don't write a book about something you know nothing about.
    No offense.

    Thanks, real israeli

pascha bchochma, I appreciate it, but believe me when I tell you that I'm not writing a book about seminary. Now what I am writing about is a topic I know a lot about. So why write about something I don't know about? In my perfect world, seminary would not exist, but seeing that I want to write an authentic novel, I gotta deal with reality. So I appreciate any help. And just so you know, many writers write about topics they know nothing about. That's what research is for. Not every mystery writer knows police protocol. Research.

    Thanks.

Ok, thanks for clarifying. What is your background and what do you want to know about seminaries? Do you already know about the application process, the reasons girls go to seminary, parents' attitudes? If you give me some idea what you're looking for I'll be happy to explain.

Incorrigible; semi-retarded; eccentric; perhaps a woman; not Mod 80. Sometimes a bit over the top.

Boys to go yeshiva, to get more knowledge,
girls go to seminary, to get more stupider.

(Hmm, doesn't have the same ring. Maybe the poetry thread people can help us out?)

pascha bchochma, thanks for offering to help =). I don't need anything too detailed. Basically, classmates of my main character want to know which seminaries she's applying to. They assume she's going to get into a top one. My main character doesn't care though. So think of it like your friends gushing over seminary when you don't care at all. Also my main character's friends would be gushing about where they're applying to too.

    Thanks so much!

what type of character is your main character? modern, yeshivish...
it sounds like bjj is your best bet - it's the only one pretty much all crowds know about....

Popa get out of my thread! lol

See this is why I don't like this whole seminary thing, but my character is in 12th grade. Grr. Okay no labels. She's just a frum girl, average student, great at chumash and she's going through a difficult time (can't say what bec it'll spoil everything). I was thinking of putting BJJ but I wanted some more I guess. Wish seminary didn't have to exist!

    Thanks!

Why don't you make it take place in the future, when there is intergalactic travel, and seminaries don't exist anymore?

Lol, popa. That could be a good idea for another novel, but this one has to take place nowadays. But I like that idea. Really up my alley with the sci-fi!

You are welcome to my thread now

You can stick to BJJ, Mesores Rochel, Nachlas, and if you want her to be yeshivish Hadar

This lobsterback doesn't get a subtitle. Next time don't massacre us in Boston, and we'll think about it. And no taxation without 16th amendmentation!

Or you can be original and make one up!

how about bnos chaya hogwads? (or something like that)

Queen Bee -"In my perfect world, seminary would not exist,"

Now this statement I find objectionable. If you wrote, in my perfect world only girls wanting to become teachers went to seminary, not e/o - this I wouldn't have a problem with.
But not the way you wrote it.
Do you have a problem with guys going to Yeshiva too?

I actually don't. Feel free to explain why you don't believe any Jewish girl should go to seminary. After all this is Your thread.

Health, no, thank you, I’d rather not explain. I believe in what I believe in, but I will not give you, or anyone else on this forum, a reason to ridicule or belittle me. You’ve done enough of that in previous posts, and I still remember the fact that you never apologized. You think you were right, that’s totally fine. But you still should have apologized because the way you spoke is not the way a person speaks to another person, let alone a Jew to a fellow Jew.

I know you came in here to stir things up. I’d appreciate it in the future if you stay away from my posts and I stay away from yours. It would make both our “CR lives” much more pleasant.

    Thank you.

"In my perfect world, seminary would not exist."

See, now that is a good question: In a perfect world, do women exist?

Hashem made odom, and then said "lo tov heyos haodom levado" and so created chava. So did something change in between? Because if nothing changed, then why didn't Hashem also make chava to begin with?

I don't know the answer to that. My best guess is that Hashem knew all along, but there is some reason that chava had to be created from odom.

QB, do you mind if I ask why you think seminary shouldn't exist? I promise to to argue with you about it - I just want to know.

QB, you really are better off using a made-up name for the seminary, especially if your character goes there and anything important to the plot of your novel will happen there.

If you want her to apply to a few sems and then have her go to your fake, you can do that - use a handful of real names from the ones people suggest above and list your made-up name among them.

For made up names, you can either use something like Bnos Sara (which is good b/c it looks like the reference is to Sara Schenirer AH) or Bnos Torah, or Ateres Bas Torah etc. Just do NOT steal any names of Creedmoor sems, like Bnos Burqa, or my trademarked "120-denier seminary" line!

Wun Uv Meny, I don't mind having a discussion with you, but the CR is not exactly an environment where a member, who has a very different opinion than the norm, is welcome. I'm sorry.

The Great Bear of Creedmoor, yeah I thought about using made-up seminaries, but I figured I might as well use real ones since I won't actually have my character attend seminary. I just need to mention names, that’s all, and I won't be bashing anyone. Thanks!

:) What would I know? The sems I know about are Bnos Burqa, Machon Cholere, Bnos Kanois (daytime) and Merkaz lePritzus (night sem).

Copying a couple from a list:

    Darchei Bina
    Afikei Torah
    Be'er Myriam
    Midreshes Tehilla
    Machon Raaya
    Ateres Bnos Yerushalayim
    Peninim
    Seminar Y-m

I have no idea who these appeal to or what their perceived qualities may be. My Pell Grant seminaries change names as soon as the bank transfers hit my Panamanian and Belize accounts :).
