I think this thread is supposed to be about vacation. But nice alliteration.

My “Islander fan” muscle has long since atrophied due to the passage of decades with nothing to cheer for.

Since their last playoff series win (the thrilling game 7 OT elimination of the two-time defending Stanley Cup Champion Pittsburgh Penguins), their history has been one of mismanagement, bad choices, bad contracts, bad drafts and bad trades – and criminal fraud by would-be-owner John Spano.

Even sad-sack franchises such as the New York Jets, Los Angeles Clippers and Chicago Cubs have won playoff series more recently than they have.

Well, at least they took Captain Fish Sticks off their jersys.

I think their captain should be the winner for MVP this year. Of all superstars, he is THE MOST valuable player to his team than anyone else is to theirs, imho. I really hope they make it to the post-season this year..

I’m happy for the Islanders fans its been a long time coming and they should enjoy this last hurrah before the team moves to Brooklyn, anyhow lets go Blackhawks!!!!!

Tonight, the New York Islanders and Pittsburgh Penguins face each other in the playoffs for the fourth time. If this series is anything like the first three, hockey fans are in for a treat. The first three times these two teams faced each other, we had the all of the following:

    – Every series going to a deciding double elimination game.

    – Every double elimination game being decided by one goal.

    – Two of the three double elimination games being decided in overtime.

    – One best-of-seven series featured a comeback from a 3-0 deficit.

    – Two series featured a two-time defending Stanley Cup Champion facing elimination in a huge upset.

Here are synopses of the prior three meetings between these two teams:

    1975

The Islanders were the new kids on the block in this one. Only two years earlier, in their inaugural season, they had set a NHL record for futility, winning only twelve games over a full season. This year, they were actually a pretty decent team, although their defeat of the New York Rangers in an earlier round of the playoffs, just eleven seconds into sudden death double elimination, was regarded as luck or a fluke.

The Islanders nearly did it again that year, coming back from 0-3 to tie the two-time defending champion Philadelphia Flyers at 3-3 before losing in game 7.

    1982

    1993

That was the last series the Islanders ever won. They lost the next round to the Montreal Canadiens, despite the return of a diminished Pierre Turgeon. The Canadiens won games two and three in overtime as part of their amazing 10-0 record in OT games that playoff year.

The Penguins have had their ups and downs, including bankruptcies, the first ever player/owner in NHL history, and a return to glory with their third Stanley Cup a few years ago.

    2013

Will the Islanders win their first playoff series in twenty years?

Will Pittsburgh finally defeat the Islanders in the playoffs?

    Who knows?

While the Islanders have not matched up well to the Penguins this season (1-4-0, outscored 17-8) all of these game took place before April, when the Isles stared getting really hot. I think that if the Isles can steal one of the first two games in Pittsburgh, they will force a long series, possibly 7 games. Sidney Crosby is out for the first game, and while the Penguins still have one of the deepest lineups in the league, his absence will be noticed.

The Islanders have played well on the road lately. The Islanders’ 2nd-4th lines need to continue to play the way they have for the past 20 games. Nabby will continue to give the team a shot every night. Tavares’ line needs to be the top unit they are. Playoffs are going to be great.

while not an isle fan, i hope they beat pitts. there’s no question this edition of the penguins are great, and are a strong, legitimate SC contender. but the way the isles have been playing this year, could see them sneaking up and surprise them with an upset win. this tavares guy is absolutely superstar material, and carried his team this far. won’t be easy going up against crosby, malkin, iggy & co.

    Correction:

The Montreal Canadiens were 10-1 in overtime in 1993, not 10-0. (See what happens when you rely on memory instead of Google?)

They lost their first OT game, then won ten straight.

Montreal came back to win the next four games, the series, and eventually, the cup.

Thanks for the history lesson. Seems like the Icelanders didn’t do too well tonight…

    #1086729

    Bah

    #1086730

Wow, what a performance last night by the Islanders.

    #1086731

    Congratulations, Islander fans.

    #1086732

If you ever were a real fan, you could never walk away.

    #1086733

Well, I guess that means I’m no True Scotsman, er, Real Fan.

And it wasn’t a walk, which implies a deliberate decision. It was more of a drift; just slowly losing interest over the years and decades without even noticing its diminution.

Good luck to the Rangers & their fans tonight.

In this series I’m an Islanders fan anything that takes the Pens out of the playoffs is better for my Blackhawks.

    #1086735

    Win some, lose some.

Can’t complain, and besides, it isn’t over yet.

    #1086736

Not the game they needed to play last night. Now just force a game 7 and work from there. And Tavares just got nominated for Hart trophy (league MVP).

    #1086737

    🙁

Tough season, but a great run at the end. Proud of the Isles this year. Bright future ahead. October and the start of next season can’t start soon enough. Looking forward.

fleury: giving irrational confidence to teams since the ’12 flyers. it was a shortened season. in an 81 game season the devils would have been in the playoffs instead or at least the jets.

    Guess so.

But a series “W” still would’ve been nice.

I may even have brought my 30 year old Sports Illustrated with Billy Smith and “Bring Fourth The Cup” on its cover out of storage.

    Thank you.

    Good luck to your Blackhawks.

Last but not least, good luck to the Rangers in their game 7 tonight.

    go hawks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    #1086744

Hawks played a good game, very resilient on their part coming back from down 3-1 in the third. However 3OT has to take a toll on these players, from both teams. The rest of the series will not be as fast as game 1.

No doubt. 24 game winning streak to start the year. Getting names engraved on the cup at the end. Can’t ask for much better of a season.

Yes, Toews has a thick Canadien accent.

He has made some pro-gress, though.
