Interesting how many people tried to stop the fellow with the axe, but apparently nobody called the police. I am quite sure that among all of the bystanders, one of them had a cell phone. The other interesting thing is that the person who stole the bike is not the same one who chopped down the tree.

They were afraid to call the police - in their crowd a moser might get their house set on fire.

...But tell me that wasn't one of the funnier videos you've seen in a while.

In some communities it takes alot less.

I assumed that those we saw were the thief's friends and that he shopped and hid the ax when strangers walked by. Note: this was filmed 2 blocks from Yeshiva Torah V'das.

I think that I shall never see
Something as ugly as that tree
Since I saw no official warden
I went and made like Lizzie Borden
    With my mighty gleaming ax
I felled that tree with several whacks

Now I no longer need to hike
    Thanks to my liberated bike
If using my ax breaks the law
Next time I’ll use my new chainsaw

    My actions shouldn’t trouble you
    Think President George W.
The man who couldn’t tell a lie
I’m all done now, so long, goodbye

"Note: this was filmed 2 blocks from Yeshiva Torah V'das. "

True, but 2 blocks in the wrong direction. Kensington is a very hard to define nabe. Some blocks see nothing, others see everything.

Had this happened on E. 4th and Ave F, you'd have had more calls to Shomrim than the ax man could deliver chops to the tree.

It's so funny I go to Torah V'dass and didn't hear about it till two days later. The Torah vdos block and surrounding blocks are pretty good but if you go more then a couple blocks, it's scary.

    Serious answer:
Because of the poor video quality I couldn’t see what type of lock was used, but if it was a kryptonite-style lock or even a heavy chain link, the axe would just bounce off of it and probably get damaged.

I've cut a couple of kryptonite locks with a circular saw and abrasive blade when the owners lost the keys – it can be done in under half a minute.
(This being New York, no one even questioned me. True to Murphy's law, the keys turned up shortly after the locks were cut - in one case, within minutes.)

It isn't racist at all - that's a southern accent.
(C'mon you should know me better than that.)

    So you're anti-southern icot?

Why is makin' fun of 'em southerners accent different than makin' of 'em black folks accent?

These trees are considered City property so when they find the thief it won't be a matter of just stealing some kid's bike there will be serious consequences.

It’s important to anticipate how one’s actions and statements will be perceived, especially on a public forum such as this one.
Please supply honest answers to the following questions:

Did you understand my “Jimmah” posts to be racist?

If the answer to the first question was “No”, is that only because you have seen other posts of mine, and without that background info you might have thought them racist?

Former Parks Comissioner Henry Stern was very makpid about his trees' welfare, to the extent that he had large fines given to people who locked their bikes to trees.
