My wife has been begging for a vacation to Brooklyn for a really long time. We live not near NYC, and she wants a few days to shop and eat in Brooklyn. She's not interested in the Empire State Building, or Ellis Island, or the night life. She just wants to be able to buy frum clothing and have hundreds of kosher restaurants to chose from.

So I'm surprising her on Sunday with plane tickets for us to leave that morning for 4 days in Brooklyn. If I told anybody at work I was taking a vacation to go to Brooklyn, they would surely think I was nuts.

    What do you think?

I think its a great place to vacation. I live here and besides for the noise which might be a little annoying, I think it is a very convenient place to be for shopping and eating out.
    Have Fun!!!!

We live in the middle of the US, and our city has about 6 kosher restaurants, so the food in NY is a BIG draw. Yes, any suggestions are welcome. I think what we'd really like to find would be an Asian style (Thai, Japanese, etc) restaurant.

Luckily, we have a great free place to stay. My wife's aunt/uncle live in Manhattan for half the year and Florida the other half. They're still in Florida, so we get the use of their apartment for free.

A rav once told us we should take 3 vacations a year:

    1. One as a couple (check)
    2. Another with the kids (it's been a while - we're due)
    3. And for the third... separate vacations (sounds doable)

Great idea! I love the city. Make sure to check out the Jewish Press dining guide. U could also google kosher restaurants wherever u want to go, and u'll get listings. Just make sure the hechsher is fine. There's a place called Tiberias which is I believe 24 hours. It's in the city..down 34th street and is dairy. I like that restaurant. There's tonz of shopping in the city if that's where u want to shop...Everything (basically) can be looked up online...
    Enjoy!

@ZosHaTorah: If anyone asks, just tell them that you and your wife are vacationing in that wonderful land just over the East River.

I once heard a man say: Happy Wife. Happy Life.

Also, thank you for shopping Brooklyn. Please come again. :)

We live in Brooklyn and last year we took a vacation to Lakewood. It was a great trip! it was wonderful having an easy time finding food to eat and no problem with finding minyanim. it was probably one of the nicest trips we've taken. so coming to brooklyn doesn't sound silly if you don't live here, enjoy!!

The easiest places to vacation to are ones where there are a lot of minyanim so that you don't have to make yourself crazy to be back on time for that one minyan in the one shul in some small hicktown.

I was onced visiting my Grandparents in BP and on the way home my then 8 year old decided he needs the bathroom, So I stoped at (-) {one of the major minyen factories} and it was already after 3pm with a shul full of people in talis & tefilin, so my son asked me "Tati, do they have the minhag in (-) to daven minchah in a talis?".......

it's funny. I spoke to many people who live in Brooklyn about living here. Each one has a very strong opinion about it. Either they're very against it, or very pro it. There's no one that says "it's not bad", or, "It's Okay"!!

It's okay. I neither love nor hate Brooklyn. There are certainly better places to live, but there are also worse.

HIE is right about Schnitzi.. its a MUST for all visitors. Also be sure to daven in Bobov 15th / 48th at least one shachris (Shabbos is 10x as good, if you can swing it).

On the outside, Prospect Park / Bklyn Botanical Garden is also very nice. If you're able to, Bike-n-Roll rental on the West Side Hwy. Flat and really pleasant this week

I love BP but live too close to actually go there for vacation. enjoy it! I love that you can just walk outside at any time of the day or night and get something to eat/drink or someone to talk to...

For lunch or dinner (milchik), go to Basil, on Kingston Ave., one block north of Eastern Parkway. Eastern Parkway itself is a remarkable site, designed by the same guy who did Central Park. And Basil is a block from Lubavitch world headquarters.

I'm having so much fun reading all of your suggestions. I'm having even more fun taking you up on some of them. BP is surely a sight to see, for a frum Jew not from a town with so many Chassids. I live inside an eruv and I'm surrounded by Jews on Shabbos when they are all afoot, but I wasn't prepared for what I saw yesterday in BP. Everybody dressed in their Shabbos finest for a regular old Monday afternoon. Beautiful to see Torah Jewry thriving the way it is in Brooklyn. A Beis Medrash on nearly every corner. Rav Aron Cutler would be proud if he could see...
