If the posters vote unanimously that internet addiction is worse will you quit internetting and take up smoking?

If yes, which brand do you have in mind, something like Virginia Slims or are you more the Marlboro Reds type? Dunhill? Cigars? Pipes?

Would morah be ok with it?

    Just wondering.

An addiction is when you know that what you’r doing is not good for you but you can’t help it. (Aldough an addict will likely not admit he has a problem).

I am clearly addicted to the internet. I spend around 6 hours a day on YUTorah listening to Rav Schachter and most of the rest of it surfing Bar Ilan and using e-daf.

It’s basically a Ruchnius danger vs. a Gashmius one.

There are positive things that can be done online.

and someone can actually learn Torah all day online.

There is however no upside to Smoking.

The only Shaychus smoking has to Torah is the Issur D’oraysoh

    one is oiver when smoking.

    Toi –

So it didn’t work for you. Doesn’t mean it won’t work for anyone else. It certainly doesn’t prove that the whole thing is a shtus.

    Toi- “carrs book doesnt work.”

One guy said the book was so boring, he needed to smoke a whole pack while reading it.

GumBall-“Now that bussiness is so Stressfull for him he smokes.”

He wants to quit,(since he did quit once)The root of the problem is stress, so suggest regular exercise like a 30 minute a day run on the treadmill and some pushups. Exercise reduces stress and can make a person be more productive throughout the day. Then he won’t need the cig as much and will be able to quit. Good luck.

p.s. sorry for making light of your thread in my previous posts, I thought it was a theoretical question.

Smoking is dangerous choice, however the people around the smoker do not get to choose whether or not they wish to be exposed to second hand smoke or not. The internet is a dangerous choice for the soul of the person who chooses to use it for dangerous and immoral purposes, but it others around him can choose whether or not they wish to join or decline.

We need both physical health and spiritual health.

Note the comparisons between Purim and Chanuka.

Mental health is good to have as well 🙂

Ask him to go brisk-walking with you every evening. And give him loads of nachas so he’ll have less stress. Cut your expenses and think of ways to help save $$$.

Smoking. Internet can be used for bad, but it can also be used for good. There is zero good about smoking and everything bad about it.

There are short term benefits- it relieves stress.

ALL addictions are bad. Countless marriages have been broken up thanks to internet addiction.

Hi BSD. lol Heroin relieves stress, too. And if drinking gasoline relieved stress and the oil companies bribed their way into marketing an ingestible product, would that make it contain a “benefit”?

Medically speaking, there are about 70 poisons that are ingested when tobacco is burned. Additionally, it is now known cigarettes contain radiation from radon that develops in the soil specifically of tobacco plants. This fact is known to the cig companies. Removing the radon would require a chemical which removes the nicotine. So they have decided against removing the radon.

In light of that information, I vote there are no benefits. Yours sounds like the rationalization of one addicted. lol. Well, I hope you quit soon, seriously. And if I could give you a vitamin, where in one swallow you would be cured of that addiction, would you take it? Even though you say cigs relieves stress?

Hi Jothar: Wrongo! There are shades of gray with addictions and ALL are not equal. The thread was asking which is worse, which requires evaluation of the differences, and not a blunt overgeneralization. And I am not even comparing cigs to internet. I am addressing the specific addition. Both are bad. And you are right about internet and marriage. Terrible! But that does not lead to countless tragic and fatal diseases. SO, when you compare the problems of internet to cigs. Hands down its cigs.

There is a way to go online and learn something new and have a positive experience. There is no way to smoke even one puff of a cig without it causing immediate damage throughout the body, of which can also be passed on, c”vs, to future generations via genes. Yep, that is right!

Hi Gumball. I hope your father stops smoking. Also, I hope you are not around the smoking because the smoke from the other end of the cigarette poses a threat (second-hand smoking) to those who are around the smoke.

gumball, ur right that you cannot neccesarily stop him. He wants to stop, but right now the stress is getting to him. Talk to him, daven, but don’t worry about the details. It doesn’t really matter if he smokes 1 or 4 or 10 a day. The danger is real, yet it’s all in Hashem’s hands. Many bad smokers have lived long, healthy lives too. You just daven, and continue showing you care and it scares you, but don’t let this bog you down.
