I want to buy a hat for Shabbos. Not a streimel per se, but an orthodox hat. I live in Sydney, Australia. Chabad have their style, I’ve seen different types in an Ashkenazi haredi shule down the road.

Are their actual Jewish hat shops or you can buy from anywhere?

Are they waterproof? What if it rains on them?

I got mine on Amazon.com and yes, it is waterproof. It better be, because I bought it specifically for when it rains. My Shabbos rain coat doesn’t have a hood, so I got the rain hat to wear with it.

Being in Sydney around the winter solstice you Excelelnce don’t require a straw hat for a while.

It would be for Shabbos honour. Not straw, no. I’ve been looking at pics last day. Fedora hats, they’re called?

Would it be better to buy from a Jewish store rather than any shop? Are the staff who make them Jewish? What if they were thinking of dogs or baking cakes or something lewd — would that impart to the hat wearer?

The Baal Shem Tov was once consulted by a community whose Sefer Torah kept becoming posul. He said the sofer was thinking of his dogs as he wrote it and would never stay kosher. Something like that.

Excellence: You should definitely be careful to only buy from a certified hat store. Look for one that has a hechsher in the window. Don’t be fooled! Many will tell you that hats don’t require a hechsher. Don’t listen to them!!! I don’t know about hechsherim in Sydney, so I can’t be of any help to you in recommending a store.

    To ensure no shatnez?

Not just any hechsher, either – you need to find a Badatz hechsher.

Bought my hat from a store called Bencraft in Brooklyn, NY. They might ship internationally. You should contact them.

I think they are waterproof, but I have a jacket with a hood that can cover the hat if it rains/snows.

I only trust the hats that my wife makes.

Avram, I hope the ingredients are all under Badatz (or at least blessed by a Rabbit).

Also, you need to tovel it before using it 🙂

Seriously, I got mine at Kova in Boro Park.

Although, if you are going to order online, you should know your hat size and shape (rounder or long oval).

Also realize that some hats have a higher crown part than others. Depending on your face, some might look better than others.

Which non-Jewish hat stores sell the type of Borsalinos that the yeshivish world wears?

Typically any black hat you buy from a jewish hat store is made out fur felt (rabbit fur) and there are no shatnez problems.

And there is a store called hat box they have many locations and they ship world wide and none of their hats have a shatnez problem.

Bergdorf Goodman. Pricey but very high quality.

So hats need a hechsher to be better?

I like the one the Brisker Rav wore…
