It’s no secret that Dovid Gabay picked lyrics for his hit song “Legabay” to be oponymous, meaning it is supposed to hint at his name as well. So I pulled out my michlol maaramrim upesgamim to see what other “legabay” words he could have used. Truth be told, it’s slim pickings. I saw 2 others. One was about when gold or silver is condsidered produce instead fo money for transactions, and not too inspiring. the other one was “legabay mili deavuha, katan hu”- a grown man, in regards to his father’s estate, is considered a minor. not that inspirational either, but it fits the tune…

“digidididatam datam, legabay miLI’ de’aVU’ha katan hu…”

I was just at Bar Mitzva and a song came on I felt I was at a disco. How permissive is it to take questionable/treif songs and make it kosher?

“I was just at Bar Mitzva and a song came on I felt I was at a disco.”

I was listening to JM in the AM wednesday morning and a song comes on that was using a tune from the movie shrek (the tune was popularized by the movie, but was out even longer).

“How permissive is it to take questionable/treif songs and make it kosher?”

This is not a psak halacha, just my opinion. If your going to listen to the billy joel tune “because its a catchy tune” (just like you read the magazine for the articles) buy the CD and

Shua Kessin, Mendy Wald, Baruch Levine…I find their songs very pleasant and not too “shticky.”

Shlomo Carlebach remains my all time favorite. He may not have had the smoothest voice with the greatest range or the catchiest tunes with the hippest beats, but for music that is inspiring and uplifting, I still find him to be my favorite. R’ Abish Brodt is not far behind.

    Big Yehuda Green fan.

In my opinion he sings straight from the heart. Another great singer would be Baruch Levine, beautiful songs and he also sings straight from the heart. They dont have the best voices but the music touches you.

Im still a huge Avraham Fried fan and that wont change any time soon!

so, i just added shloimy gertner to the list. he’s good!

I personally think the new Mezumin Cd, with Srully Williger, Gideon Levin, and Heshy Rubin has some really nice songs on it. What does the rest of the world think??

hmmm… my favorites are yehuda, abie rotenberg, aryeh kunstler, and i enjoy acapella. pretty much if it’s not a predictable melody and it has nice harmony to back up the regular, I like it.
