Adults keep arguing over what’s best for children without even asking the kids what they think.
Ok, so I asked my kids.
They said that they wanted to stay home, surf the internet, and eat cookies.
Ooh… Cookies are not so healthy. Too much sugar, and often margarine. Better not.
RebYidd- At what age do you think they should have say in their education?
Parents want certain things for their children and they want them to be educated in a certain way. Some parents want their children to learn Torah most of the day while some parents want their children to learn secular studies most of the day.
I remember my grandfather saying: when I want your opinion I’ll tell you what it is.
The Montessori method, gives children some autonomy over their education. I think it would be wonderful if the idea would be mainstreamed.
These days, even parents have little say in their kids education.
Odd parent have a lot more say.
i used to love the Montessori method but as an OT i see the problems it raises. besides it being very very difficult to use side by side with learning sifrei kodesh, children who have weak skills learn to avoid those skill areas completely instead of working thru them. Children who struggle with fine motor or group work will sometimes opt out of activities that develop those skills and fall further behind.
Syag, Would be great if some good minds would work through the snags and figure a new method, based on Montessori. A fixed up version to take care of all the issues you mention. We can call it the “Syag Lchochma Method”.

As it happens, i am working with some amazing people on developing an early childhood curriculum that is based on the developmental milestones. Maybe you can join us?

You obviously gave it some thought and came up with some of the weak points, all you have to do is figure out how to improve them.
