Is one permitted to write for homework and school assignment purposes on chol hamoed? What if one has class? Can you write in class to take notes and do assignments?
October 16, 2011 4:50 am at 4:50 am #817325Dr. SeussMemberWhat about writing on an online forum?
October 16, 2011 4:53 am at 4:53 am #817326taking a breakMemberKshmo thnx for asking. I have the same q for the assignment due mon morn. Anyone have an answer?
October 16, 2011 4:56 am at 4:56 am #817327Kshmo Kein HuMembertyping is allowed. I want to know about writing in or for class, like physically writing.
October 16, 2011 4:56 am at 4:56 am #817328Sam2ParticipantI was always told absolutely not. Unless the teacher really doesn’t understand or refuses to allow you to wait a week to do the assignment/homework then it should be considered a Davar Ha’aveid and should be okay. But that should be avoided if at all possible. Notes are usually possible to get from someone else.

October 16, 2011 5:00 am at 5:00 am #817330Dr. SeussMemberAnd bringing a laptop or tablet (iPad) to type your notes is okay (even thought writing is not)?
October 16, 2011 5:02 am at 5:02 am #817331MiddlePathParticipantI was told that one is permitted to write in such a situation. Though if you can write in an unusual manner, that may be better. For my classes, I have to draw besides write, both on paper and using an electronic drawing tablet, and I was told that both are permitted, even with drawing in the usual manner since I am graded partly on clarity and accuracy.
October 16, 2011 5:05 am at 5:05 am #817332Kshmo Kein HuMemberNot sure about a tablet cuz thats writing, but read that typing is ok. I know I could potentially get notes but this is a class that involves active writing and assignments during the class session, like in class essays. And no, it is not a Torah class.
October 16, 2011 5:06 am at 5:06 am #817333Sam2ParticipantRav Elyashiv is of the opinion that typing is considered real writing for all Halachic intents and purposes. Many assume that there is more reason to be Meikil by writing. Ask your own Rabbi.
October 16, 2011 5:18 am at 5:18 am #817334Dr. SeussMemberSam: So how are you typing here on this forum?
October 16, 2011 5:23 am at 5:23 am #817335Sam2ParticipantObviously I don’t hold like R’ Elyashiv in this case.
October 16, 2011 5:24 am at 5:24 am #817336Dr. SeussMemberWho do you hold by in this case?
October 16, 2011 5:29 am at 5:29 am #817337Sam2ParticipantEveryone who has ever used e-daf.com, a Bar Ilan CD, or written any words of Torah on a computer screen.
