Tefilla Effort on Behalf of Jonathan Pollard

This effort is labeled Operation Yonatan, taking place today, erev Rosh Chodesh Sivan 5772.

Much has been said regarding the terrible injustice that has been done to Yonatan. Now we have an opportunity to correct this. We all want to see Yonatan free. The first of Sivan when all of Am Yisrael stood at Har Sinai and waited to receive the Torah. This day is when prayer is easily accepted.

We ask everyone to please choose one of the following options: 1. Tshuva – accept on yourself one small change or do a good deed. (for example helping a friend or neighbor in need). 2. Tefillah – Recite all of Sefer Tehillim (even if divided among a number of people) and have Yonatan in mind. 3. Tzedaka – Give tzedaka in his merit or volunteer in a gemach.

A special tefilla has been written as well and it appears on the Ezrat Nashim website.

Anyone deciding to take part is requested to register by calling 0722-727-727 or emailing [email protected]

Organizers are hoping to have 27,000 people register, one thousand people for each year Jonathan Pollard has served in prison.

  1. Some years ago I read that he’s been studying in prison water resources management and hopes to contribute something in this field when he gets out and comes to Eretz Yisroel. Chazal said in Avos that anyone who accepts the yoke of Torah upon himself will have the yokes of the government and of livelihood taken away from him. This sounds like a promise that if he were to make a serious commitment to devote his very considerable talents entirely to Torah (to the exclusion of politics and water resources management etc.) the yoke of government would be taken away, and I’m sure he’d have no problems getting people to provide for his material needs. Could someone please run this past daas Torah and then try to convey it to him. (I need to listen to this myself – please daven that he and I both do so.)

  2. Perhaps 60,000 Jews can assemble in a stadium to demonstrate to Obama how strongly the Jewish community feels about freeing him….Or how about 100,000 people in front of the White House? Why has this never been done?

  3. #3 It is important to remember that although our hearts go out to our brother who is rotting in jail for something which he probably had the best intentions for, too much rallying on this issue can be only counterproductive.
Let us not forget that the American Government sees it as a threat that Jews may have a dual loyalty or even a stronger loyalty to Israel then they do too the U.S.A. There are many Jews who hold top positions in this country and this is a very serious concern for them.
Let us also remember that although he may have had the best of intentions this is wrong according to Halacha as we are obligated first and foremost to the country in which we reside. Spying for another country is treason, and let us be more clear on this matter. Only this way we can make sure that such things will not reaccur and that the concerns of our (very benevolent!!!) government will subside.

Really? Where is this written? Our first duty is to our own nation, which is Am Yisroel, not the USA (nor for that matter Israel). Any other duty must come second. Whether you like it or not, that is how it is, and one who puts the interests of the country where he lives above those of his own nation is truly a traitor.

  5. Our first and foremost obligation is to the Ribono Shel Olom who has commanded us in Yirmiyohu 29:7 to bequest the peace of the place to which he has exiled us to, and to pray for it because in its peace WE WILL HAVE PEACE AS WELL. (Klal Yisroel)
As Chaz”al bring down in Kesubos 111 Hakadosh baruch made us swear on this matter of not rebelling against the nations, and as Rabbi Eliezer has admonished their if we accept this we’ll be alright otherwise disaster is to be expected.
