Breaking from past tradition, Israel has announced it welcomes an inspection of its nuclear facility by International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Dr. Shaul Chorev, who heads Israel’s Atomic Energy Agency made the announcement during an address that the IAEA Conference in Vienna, as he also used the forum to condemn both Iran and Syria.
In light of the disaster which occurred in Fukushima, Israel is now welcoming inspectors of the UN international body to conduct a safety inspection of the Soreq facility.
Chorev addressed the efforts by Syria and Iran to build atom bombs, citing Israel’s need to defend itself, adding that he is confident inspectors will find the facility in total compliance with international safety standards. He also expressed opposition to the planned conference for Mideast disarmament, citing the realities of the region and Israel’s need to remain in a position it can defend itself against mounting threats.
